In the shelter of a grove of trees and greenery there was a stack of stones, boulders piled reasonably high with one great slab of black stone to top it off.

Atop this stone-stack lounged a lion, his monumental skull wreathed in the soft laurel of his mane. His pelt seemed to fade into the early dawn behind him, and the sun's gentle tendrils lit his mane up like a great halo. White crackled up from his belly fur, mimicking the fading twinkles in the sky above. With his massive head pillowed on equally impressive paws, the king looked over his sleepy pride with adoration.

A small shrouded hollow spread out below him, with high rock walls to one side and a protective semicircle of shrubs and low green cover at the other. Water collected in the center, a small natural spring that supplied this pride with precious water. A short distance from the great lion's sunning spot, lionesses and their cubs lounged in the shade of a gnarled old umbrella acacia, the mother of most of the surrounding trees and a guardian to the other foliage. The wall to one side had a shallow dugout devoted to keeping the pride's things safe- herbs, trinkets and treasures and even some food scraps, and in front of it sat an older lioness adorned with ornaments of bone and gold.

Those lionesses without young cubs lead hunting parties, and yearling lionesses trailed after them eagerly. Those heavy with their unborn stayed within the grove and enjoyed the cooling shade and fresh water, watching those cubs too young to go out on the hunt.

"Good morning, my King!" Called a young lioness, her colours unlike those of her siblings. She beamed at Veilloth as she hurried to catch up with the morning hunting patrol. Veilloth regarded her with a warm smile, one eye open, inclining his head toward the yearling. She grinned, spurred on, and the great king watches the lioness' tail disappear through the treeline. A good number of the young lions here hadn't come from Veilloth's own royal line, but they were all his family regardless. Where his own cubs were dark of coat, with light or starry markings, some had outrageously colourful fur by comparison, at least one cub for every stripe of the rainbow. Veilloth was soft-hearted, a quality that extended beyond even the lines of his own specie. When his queens occasionally brought home a lonely cub, it was with the certainty that their king would accept it into the pride. With such successful huntresses, and more in training, the young king could afford to overlook a few wayward creatures now and then.

Besides, who could look at an abandoned cub and say no?

As the sun rose and its rays began to truly warm the land, Veilloth luxuriated in the comfort it brought, and he failed to notice a sleek silvery lioness stalking up behind him. With not but the whisper of her tail over the stone to give her away the lioness sprang onto Veilloth's shoulders, paws heavy but soft with claws sheathed. The great lion yelped a noise of surprise and rolled with the motion, hauling both lions over the edge of the Pridestone. The fall was short, and the pair landed on the soft grass in a heap of muffled laughter.
