Bloody paw prints traced across the sandy oasis. They lead to a young dark-furred lion by the name of Cogwheel. It had only been a few hours since he had woken up surrounded by the stench of death and the sound of silence.
Cogwheel was born only 2 years ago and had only just met the pride his mother was from when the world had come to an end. Just a day ago he had been resting on the sunny rocks alongside the king of the pride, now he made his way across this vast territory believing his pride to be dead. Cogwheel released multiple sharp breaths as he staggered forward, with no clear destination in mind.
His breath hitched as he reached the top of one of the many sandy dunes and spotted what he thought for mere moments was a hallucination. All thoughts of what this patch of greenery he saw could be were driven away by the pain in Cogwheel’s limbs and the aching in his bones. He gained a burst of strength and speed as his mind filled with a strong terror of The Wastelands around him. With widened eyes, flattened ears, and a franticness in his bound, Cogwheel made his way to the small patch of trees up ahead; sanctuary.
Cogwheel dove into the foliage, branches and thorns tearing at his pelt as he disappeared into the undergrowth. His dark pelt blended into the shadows as he skidded to a halt and dove behind a large log, presumably a fallen tree. Hours passed, and eventually, night claimed the territory. Cogwheel remained where he was, hidden within the surrounding forest, most likely the last forest.
A few days passed and soon enough Cogwheel had no choice but to come out of hiding and find food. He still retained the hunting skills his mother had taught him, and to his surprise, this small patch of forest was flooding with prey. It didn’t take long for him to catch a few rabbits. Once his stomach was full he returned to his hiding spot and lay down amongst the ferns. He rested his head on his paws and closed his eyes, but sleep didn’t come easily.
This is how life was for a couple of months. Ultimately Cogwheel turned to insanity and lost his mind. He became shut off from the outside world and rarely ever left the foliage. Soon after his mental downfall any memory of his past vanished, and he became nothing but an empty husk of who he had once been. This is how the wastrels, other survivors, knew Cogwheel.
