The King Has Stepped Down

Ol' Man watched his pride from a distance, laying in the soft grass that had grown following the recent wet season. His sons and daughters, some grown now themselves were sunning themselves in a communal grooming pile that also included lions totally unrelated to themselves. Ol' Man was proud to see the diversity and proud of the easy way his 'real' family had taken to their extended family. The lion, who should have been in the prime of his age, was skin and bones, shuddering when he simply sighed too heavily as he shifted his weight around some to alleviate cramping in one leg.

The old King had known for months now that he was dying, though he had kept it from almost everyone until the end. His saffron eyes landed on the strong and serious blue male that would be taking his place. Not one of his own children, still, Boreas had been the most mature sub-male ready to take over and keep the pride lands run the way Ol' Man had wanted. To their credit, his own children had accepted the news with no questions aside from why their sire would be naming an heir so soon.

Ol' Man rested his heavy head on his front paws and allowed his eyelids to close for longer intervals, continuing to watch his family when his eyes did open and focus. A hint of a smile found the beast's muzzle because of the display of unity before him, cubs and lionesses fat and happy, sharing and nurturing. He tried less and less often to open his eyes at all now. The images were in his head anyway, permanently so, besides, it was just so hard to keep his lids from closing now. The male rolled to one side, enjoying the sun on his pelt, and somewhere during the nap, the King ran away into the sky to meet his ancestors.

The King of this land has died.
