So, you've got this GORGEOUS pair of lions, both with matching coats, and even some matching marks at 100%! More babies of the same! But what's this? Your Onyx stud, bred to your Onyx lioness, both from long lines with no evidence it will EVER pop up... Have a cub who is Mahogany. Yup, that actually happened to me, though the stud in question is a customized starter stud(Onyx). But nowhere in the mother's family history(That I know of)... Is there mahogany. I'm not saying I don't like the coat - It's quite lovely. The issue is how absolutely RANDOM it is that an Onyx male bred to an Albino female will have anything from NCL coats to slate to black to actual Onyx or Albino... Or Mahogany. What I'm suggesting is more clear-cut genetic inheritance on Lioden. Something like Celestial x Albino shouldn't produce everything BUT either coat, it should PRIMARILY produce the less rare coat, with a CHANCE at the rare coat. I'm getting that it's supposed to be random, but it's TOO random. Unfortunately, the same is even applying to markings - I've had friends complain that they bred two lions that share a marking 100%, and not only does the marking have the chance of just NOT passing on at ALL(So you get a cub with a bare butt when both parents might have at least 6 markings each, and 1 or more in common), but... I'm not sure if I've ever seen a marking pass on 100% when both parents show it at 100% strength. So my suggestion is a clearer guide on how genes on Lioden work besides "Onyx + Albino = Something not in the tree" |

Right. Let's see. -'Family trees' have no influence on offspring, only the parents do. -Onyx is meant to be random and hard to breed, it throws a lot of NCL and custom colors. -Markings always have a chance of not passing down, regardless of whether both parents have the same marking in the same slot, though it's less than if the other lion has an empty slot, or other marking. ![]() |

Mausy summed it up well, though I am not completely opposed to a firmer set genetics[Such as Onyx+Onyx having higher chances at Onyx ect.] this seems more opinionated about it. ![]() |

Where did you find that information? Because I've looked on the wiki - Old and new - and it says nothing about that. Plus, logistically, Onyx x Onyx should still = at least Slate, Maltese, grey, or something else remotely close to Onyx besides cream, tan, one of several variations of gold... If that's actually something in the system, it's a terrible flaw that needs fixing, as again, it's TOO random. ![]() |

Kitten@ it's..just the way thingsa been I guess XD All I know that is pretty much ANY coat and produce ANY coat that was before it. So Chestnut can throw any coat when bred to a non-special lion. Onyx can throw I think all coats excluding Chestnut. Someone correct me, of course. In no way shape or form has Cat always been completely right, this is just how I understand the game and it may be flawed. But, LioDen is a Beta game atm, it's like heritage. I assume the staff will do one last massive overhaul when the game goes fully public. Something like that is quite the project. ![]() |

We don't really have a genetics system, and frankly I kinda like it this way. I like the randomness, and while I can see the benefits of them being more predictable, I wouldn't like getting rid of our wild cards altogether. As far as I know, Onyx is the only one this random, the others make more sense (so, Celestials frequently fail to maltese, dove gray, etc). The genetics will probably be overhauled eventually, but until then, the way things work seems alright for a beta game to me. ![]() |

That doesn't change the fact that people are potentially spending real money to breed their lioness with a rare coat to a stud with a matching rare coat, and getting 1-4 cubs that they could easily have gotten for free from a randomized starter stud and an NCL. It's nice for the stud owners, how have 0 liability on if the coat passes or not, but for the lioness owners, does the risk really match the reward when it comes to HOW random it is? ![]() Edited on 13/10/14 by Kittens (#19657) |

It was stated by a mod on a thread that the family tree has nothing to do with a cub's base/markings, but (paraphrasing here) "a cub can get a grandparent's base color, but it is rare." If Onyx bred like any other base, than these would be the possible results for breeding it to Albino- Onyx Maroon Slate Fiery Cocoa Prune Maltese White Albino However, Onyx has a "randomness factor" added to it's so called "genetics." LioDen in general(at least right now), does not follow any form of genetics, instead bases are passed using a hierarchy like the one above. To be honest, the current breeding system(at least as far as looks) can be understood, it just takes time. I spent 6+ months figuring out how base color is passed, and at this point I can predict what a cub's base will be without the Scrying Stone(which does help) and even if a parent is Onyx. With the "research" I've done(and the help of several others and helpful resources. Some of the info is from staff too[from posts on various threads. Mods and Helpers mostly]), I made this guide. Also, here's an example of 100% marking on both parents passing- Father Mother Cub 1 Cub 2 So 100% markings can pass ;) ![]() |

There is a genetics, system, in a sense, there's a base coat spectrum :3 You can see more details here Personally, I'd prefer a proper genetics system as suggested here, rather that percentage edits. Oh, one last thing I forgot to mention. Marking opacity doesn't matter at all for marking heredity. ![]() Edited on 13/10/14 by Maulise | Formerly Lisim (#32469) |
