I've been trying to improve my backgrounds for the past few months, and while I can usually get the foreground to look pretty good the more distant background is what gets me. Xp I'd love some opinions/tips/constructive critiques on my most recent attempt if you can offer them.(: Comments on the dog are also welcome! I attempted some shading to make her a bit more realistic. Cx I work on an ipad and use Autodesk Sketchbook Pro for my art. This is supposed to be in south Georgia(the state, I haven't been there in a few years and I never lived there, so that's just from memory) with the dog on a hill, and the rest in the distance past it. That is intended to be a pond in the background..Not sure if that's clear or not aha ![]() Here's my dA if you want to see my other art. http://4dogowner.deviantart.com ![]() Edited on 08/08/15 by Haagen-Daagen (#11370) |

This is amazing and very accurate! I happen to live in Georgia and there are a few places that look like this. This piece resembles a campsite. This is overall awesome. ^^ ![]() |

This is so beautiful! The only thing I can see that needs help is how stiff the dog looks. Evetythung else is stunning! ![]() |

I definitely get that it's a pond! I think maybe making it a different colour than the sky might be a little more helpful though. Also, I think the colours in the background get a little muddy and we lose a lot of the really beautiful features of the dog! It's so handsome and so I personally really want it to POP! Maybe try using a different hue for the landscape, either brighter or duller and that should help that pup really stand out. The only other critique that I really have is that I found myself spending more time looking at the horizon line than the dog. Maybe shake up the horizon a bit? Add some trees or even just make it a little more hilly? But like I said, that's a very lovely dog! Great Job!! ![]() |

Hmmm, I've always been too lazy to attempt backgrounds. xD I'm just gonna start off by saying I think you did an excellent job shading the grass and making it patchy with dirt. It's very hard to point the finger on what exactly could be improved. I think the dark-green outline around the back of the pond seems very strange, because it cuts into the brown dirt very abruptly, making the water look almost like a solid. Also, I think that to make the land beyond the pond seem more distant, the colors could be tinted, darkened, or faded, rather than just the outlines blurred. Maybe there could also be some darker, almost black, colors, (just a pinch, where some of the dark green shadows are) to rival the very dark lineart on the dog? That way he (or she) would be less separated from the background. Those are just my ideas. u: ![]() |
