I was thinking I know it happens in many different species, and since it's viable maybe we could introduce it here as a new mute.

Cleft Palette

Of course this isn't lethal in humans & pets due to correction surgery and all.

Now hear me out that this could go a few different ways:

A. Lethal Deformity : The cub wouldn't last long, not being able to nurse properly and all. (dies at x number of months).

B. Adolescent Death : The cub makes it to adolescent however because of the lack of nutrition dies at a year old.

C. Doesn't Die: However the lion/lioness is severely sick and will pass on at a young adult age because of the lack of nutrition as it was developing and its inability to hunt/eat properly. (meaning they would have frail bodies, skinny legs and of course the cleft palette)

I'd love to hear helpful criticism on this and opinions.

How would they show a cleft pallet since that's inside the mouth :/
I'm just curious.

Stephie Love, cleft palate does show on the outside as well, it would have a split upper lip and nose. I've seen animals with cleft palate before, its not pretty.

Also most pets with it are put down at birth by a lot of breeders (dogs, cats, just about any breeder that experiences a cleft palate), since surgery is just so expensive with literally no guarantee of recovery.

An animal in the wild born with a cleft palette would most definitely die from starvation and infection. The cleft palate literally has a hole in the roof of the mouth and that creates a breeding ground from bacteria. I support for the realism, but I think if this were added, it should be as a lethal mutation, with the cub dying at 3-4 months. It definitely would not survive to adolescence, most don't even make it to weaning.

@Chazza I agree 100% with you ! It would be a interesting thing to add as a lethal deformity!
