I saw the poll in the news this week which considered dropping lioness fertility based on her age.

To start with, all the ages listed are way too low! Real lionesses don't have lower fertility until age 11 so starting the drop at age 5 or 8 isn't more realistic at all. It should be at age 11 at earliest.

I didn't see much of any discussion or information on what this these changes would mean for the game at large even in the chat box. Just making a large gameplay decision without talking it over can lead to regret to put it mildly. So here's a suggestion/conversation thread to get things started. Don't agree? Want to add something? Let's talk!

Other reasons to reconsider such an early fertility drop regardless of what the polls say

Age 8 is literally middle age on a lion. You can find NCLs at age 8 because they're still "good". This makes NCLs even less valuable as now you don't have time to really train them.

It skews the game towards mutant breeders and away from stats. I get it: there are lots of mutant breeders who all want very low fertility. Not everyone wants mutants, though, and some even breed for high fertility. I don't think this game is supposed to be about mutants anyway. That's why they are supposed to be RARE.

Don't cubs inherit their mother's fertility (with a little randomization)? If so, an older lioness with dropped fertility will mean less fertile cubs. If I'm reading this right, it means A goddess at age 14 is looking at 65% (average!) at best. Her cubs will be looking at cubs with 35% once they're the same age. That's from 100% to 35% in two generations. Do we really need to force people into using vuka vuka/chaseberry just for "average" lionesses?

Every time you breed past age 8 will create a fertility drop. Period. The cooldown naturally creates this from having to wait and having the fertility lower during this time. Even if I got the part on fertilities passing down wrong, this (and the rest) should still hold true.

It nerfs Vuka Vuka fruit into a single use item that loses effectiveness constantly until it's like you never used it. This is a GB purchased item ONLY. It's not an event item that you can earn through the game or a random world drop. This means it should be less expensive and less rare with a less "special" effect.

Using multiple chasteberries for a single breeding suddenly becomes more cost efficient than Vuka Vuka which will hurt GB sales. Can't use that many berries? Well... just buy GB. Can't buy GB? This could be a problem.

It makes pride dynasty basically useless. Few people use them already, but they do see use! With lionesses becoming weaker so early in their lives almost nobody will want to keep old lionesses unless they're a mutant breeder because it's just too expensive to bother breeding them.

From a non-mechanics, lore-building standpoint it's horrifying. Even non-NCL lionesses are going to face a Logan's Run scenario where they're all killed before they get "old" to make way for younger, more fertile gals. Chased gals won't be wanted because they're too old so they will die alone on the plains. Even the nature reserves aren't good as it hampers conservation efforts as they're full of less fertile gals. The future looks grim for lion kind.

We already have pretty much everyone not looking for mutants breeding with the highest stat males and all the lions are starting to look the same. Lower fertility will make it even harder to create a new high stat male without resorting to breeding to the already existing high stat males.

As you can see, there's a lot to reconsider here, even the point that fertility dropping at age 8 "Just makes sense"! Please reconsider having fertility drop at such an early age regardless of what the poll says.

Thank you.

Ugh, yeah. I really don't want the fertility drop at all, but making it start at 11 years would at least be better.

I agree with you, Thalath. I would prefer no drop, but if there was a drop 11 makes more sense as it's more realistic, gives even older NCLs a chance, and allows for mostly normal gameplay for the majority of a lionesses life.

It also bugs me that there were no threads about this. A thread weighing the pros and cons with a voting button at the bottom would have been better so people could have made a more informed decision instead of just voting. Having fertility drop so early is a huge gameplay change that will affect everyone and shouldn't be done lightly.

Yes, I'm sure there are pros in this (mostly for mutant breeders at first glance) but really, it's generally been left unexplored when there needs to be more of a look given to it.

I support. I feel bad for how fertility works now and for how common muties are becoming. Lionesses with very low fertilities having 4 cubs? Goddesses having just one? Hundreds and hundreds of muties being born everyday? And now they want to drop fertilities even more, at an earlier age? Doesn't seem quite fair or realistic to me. When I saw the poll, I thought 8 was a way early age for lionesses' fertilities to drop, too.

You have a point, Mesu. Four cubs on a poor fertility lioness and mutants everywhere isn't right and doesn't make sense.

Before people start to say "but we used items!", help should be required for mutants to exist in order to keep them rare. The fact that 4 cubs can happen on a poor fertility lioness with a bad genetic line (mutant) without items is what I'm talking about.

Yes, some of the mutants are cute, but having the game full mutants is far from realistic. You don't see lions with genetic problems in the wild for a reason. Things like folded ears, overgrown claws, and too long fur can kill. This is supposed to be a lion simulator, not a mutant breeding game. Making mutants shouldn't be made easier by adding default fertility lowering at early ages.

Your argument is incredibly valid and you present it very well. I agree with this completely, and thank you so much for bringing up such vital points I hadn't even thought of before!

The other thing is that a lower fert doesn't always guarantee a mutant cub. From natural breedings, I've had all my natural mutants come from good, average, and even high ferts. There's no reason to really lower fertility at all if you try to breed natural mutations.

EDIT: just had to point out that the fertility has nothing to do with litter size. Based on some earlier comments I just wanted to make sure that was known.

I didn't know this was a thing until I found this topic, I must have missed it as I skipped days.

this is bad news for mute breeders too, as what will happen to single digit fertilities? they will be infertile and require a chaseberry boost to 10%. bad news for mute breeders who have 1% with special marks they wish to pass.

If lowering fertility truely 'makes sense' why not just cap the number of cubs an 11+ year old lioness can have? lowering cub litter numbers would represent a lowering of fertility (but not breeding quality) in a lioness. Having one cub litters (without items) makes more sense and wouldn't cause all the issues of making noted here and also making her harder to breed by lowering fertility percentage.

Personally, I would kill all age 11+ lionesses if the chances of getting more than one cub were decreased (or eliminated, like you seem to imply). Fertility aside, it's not worth keeping a lioness around that's, guaranteed, only going to have one cub, when it's likely she was going to have one anyway (since that's the most common litter size). If I'm already spending a lot of energy to breed a VLF girl, I'm missing out on levels and the stat gain from them, possibly stud fees so I can use my energy to breed my own lionesses, and event currencies. I'm not, on top of that, going to spend GB for grains or buffalo balls just to get more than one cub out of late breedings. Whether I'm trying to get a mutant or my VLF just happens to have pretty markings that I'm trying to pass, it's a huge penalty to have only one chance on what's going to be one of her last litters. Or maybe her last!

But! I hate the numbers that were chosen for the poll. It took a lot of just staring at them to make my choice, because 4 and 8 years are just too young for the proposed drastic drops in fertility. 4 is a spry youngster, in her prime, and 8 is only just middle aged. Drop the fertility by even 20+% after 11 and I'd be happier. The girls still have plenty of decent breeding time and if someone really wants to buy extremely low fertility girls, they still have up to two breedings out of the older ones.
