This has kinda been bugging me for a bit. One of the karma titles for evil lions is "Fearful". Fearful means to be full of fear, scared, afraid etc. Say a king was called "Fearful Generic". That means that he's afraid, not that he is feared by others.

I propose that the Fearful title should be changed to Feared, as that word has the correct meaning of something that others are scared of.

No support.

Fearful isn't incorrect. It sometimes does mean afraid, but it's also used to describe things which inspire fear. It's a perfectly valid usage of the word.

It bothers me as well. I like grabein's idea of "Fearsome"

I personal like Fearful. Like Fledgling said, it means to inspire fear.
I could say I have a fearful cold, and that just means its a really horrible strain, its perfectly valid.

I support feared or fearsome. The most common usage of 'fearful' that I hear in everyday life is as you described (the state of being afraid), and while it may have other usages (to mean 'to inspire fear'), I feel like it would be better to switch to a word that doesn't have contradictory usages.

In response to Fledgling and Blue Pidgeon:
Yes, I understand fearful can sometimes mean to inspire fear, but when most people see the word they think fearful=afraid. Words like fearsome and feared are more widely known to commonly mean "Something that others are afraid of."

So why claim that the title needs to be changed because it is incorrect, if you understand that it's not? Had your post not suggested that you didn't know the definition of the word, I wouldn't have made the post that I did. I apologize for making assumptions.

If you want the title to be changed simply because some people may not know the word's meaning, your post should probably reflect that. As it stands, your post seems to imply that the word is being used in an objectively incorrect way, when that isn't the case at all. Sorry if I'm not properly understanding, it's just a bit confusing to me. D:
