OOC::// Not gonna lie, I had Waka Waka by Shakira on a loop while I typed this out. Gives me a chance to pull out a character I haven't used in aaages. Just had to tweak her a bit.

High noon. The heat of the day was practically visible in the bright light of the sun, and no clouds were around to block the intensity. The village was bustling with activity, however, despite the heat. The sound of hooves echoed against the side of tents, and the screams of laughter from the youngsters rang out for all to hear. Flashes of black and white darted between the woven fabrics of the migratory dwellings, chasing each other and just causing a general ruckus. Every now and then, the sharp words from parents would come into play, and it would quiet down- For maybe five minutes.

A soft smile touched Azele's lips as she crossed her arms, watching the chaos that was her home. They had been in search of a new territory to call their home for two weeks now, as a fire had burnt their last home. They would return eventually, after the rains came, but until then, the food source there was far too scarce. With a laugh as two children shot underneath her, she reared up lightly on her back legs and let her front hooves crash down. They whirled around, eyes wide with fear at first, but then laughter as they realized what great beast had shocked them.

"Azele!" The smaller one let out a shrill whine, looking up at her and stamping his front feet, arms crossed and pouting. "You promised us you would play!" The taller one echoed, batting his eyelashes. Azele reached a hand out and pat each of them on the head.

"Soon, I have to go help collect food and stuff for medicine. You understand, right?" Her soft tone brought a smile from each of them, and they nodded, whirling around and sprinting off. She chuckled softly to herself as she turned on her heel, running a hand through her hair as she grabbed her knife from the side of her hut, attaching it quickly to her satchel. The heat caused sweat to start to come up from her flanks, and she swished her tail in annoyance. She hoped that they found a new home quickly, or she swore her stripes were going to fall off from this heat and all of this traveling.

She upped her speed to a slow trot as the wind picked up a bit, the cool feeling a relief as it blew her hair up around her face. Azele had traveled about a mile before she stopped, nose twitching as she searched for the herbs she came searching for.. Shit.

What were they?

Another day that was too hot. Standing in the minimal shade of a dead tree, a small group of four gatherers and a single guardian waited for the hottest part of the day to pass. The guardian stood at seven feet tall, not counting the three-foot long horns on his head. The gatherers were a bit smaller, standing at six feet, two to eight inches tall. The gatherers, made up of three males and a female, carried baskets in her hands, and two were laid over their hindquarters like saddlebags. The guardian carried only a spear, barely taller than him.

"Askari, why can't we start gathering herbs right now?" the shortest male huffed, shifting his weight from his front legs to his back. "We're wasting daylight. You know how long of a journey it is back to the village, and I'd not like to do it in the dark."

"If you want to stand in the sweltering sun during midday, then be my guest," he huffed back. "Just be warned that if you drag me out into the heat, you'll hear a lot of complaining." He pouted as he watched the group turn and spread out, beginning their jobs.

He pushed off of the tree to walk around the group, using his spear like a walking stick. Everything seemed to be going well, until he heard the sound of hooves trotting. He raised his spear to hold with both arms, ready to stab at anything that dared to try and make a move. In the distance, he saw something freeze. He snorted loudly at it, lowering his head a few times to show it his horns.

"Be gone!"

Azele drew a hand across her brow, glancing around carefully. Voices in the distance caught her attention, however, and she let her ear twitch towards them. Throwing a gaze in the direction, she began to move that way, curiosity getting the best of her. The scent of predator didn't fill her nose, so it couldn't be that bad. Besides, she'd not spoken to anyone outside of her own tribe in quite awhile. They could potentially be friendly.

The small zebra was one of the smaller in her tribe for being full grown, standing at a small 5' 11". Her hair was pulled back in a braid out of her face, and the rest of her mane was kept short due to the heat. She didn't let her small size get the best of her though, and she was one of the better fighters among her family, despite being the apprentice to the healer. Her parents were very much against a woman being a warrior, so she oftentimes left to practice on her own after nightfall.

At the sound of a yell, Azele planted her feet, shocked, with a snort. Her eyes widened and breathing quickened as a large gazelle looking man with a spear showed her his horns. Those.. did not look fun to run into. She raised her hands, a small smile touching her lips as she continued her trek towards them.

"I mean no harm.. " Her voice trailed off as she kept about twenty feet away. Her eyes glistened in a friendly way as she eyed the small group.

The group of gatherers didn't stop their task when they heard the outsider. They had little time or energy to spend on worry, so they put their complete trust and faith in the hands of their guardian. They slowly moved away from her, though. With each herb or grass picked, they took a step in the other direction, slowly widening the distance between them and the unknown.

Askari took the opportunity to charge the smaller creature, stopping about five feet in front of her to rear up and slam the bottom of his spear down as he landed, loudly. He huffed at her once more, folding his ears back against his skull. He had heard scouts talking of others like them, but he had never seen one with stripes before. He held his spear at the ready.

"If you mean no harm, then turn away." He sneered at her, watching her eyes and her hooves in quick movements of his eyes. He hoped his display and his size would be enough to keep her from advancing any further. She looked strong, so he made sure to convince himself out of just attacking. An injury this far from the village could turn deadly quickly.

Azele's gaze drew to the gatherers who paid her no attention, but she noticed their slow movement in the opposite direction. With a tilt of her head, she regarded them all curiously. They were huge compared to her.. were they afraid? At home, tribes similar to them came and went, albeit rarely. She had seen others though, and they all were friendly thus far.. Genuine confusion played on her features.

As the creature charged forward, she spread her front legs to brace for impact, but she didn't back away. Her eyes hardened as he pinned his ears and reared up in front of her, slamming his spear down. What was his deal? With a snort, she flicked her ear to the side and moved her hand to her belt in case he attacked. She wouldn't be the one to make the first move, as all she wanted was to ask a question, or maybe strike up a conversation.

"Give me three good reasons to turn away, and I will." A stubborn lilt took to her tone as she regarded the large man, her eyes narrowing as she regarded him. If he wanted to be cold, she could be cold right back.

"This isn't your land, I don't know you, and you're outnumbered." He nearly snarled his response to her, stomping one of his front hooves into the ground repeatedly. He took a step back in an attempt to keep himself from pacing, finding himself very fidgety around the stranger. "If you turn around and walk away, you'll have no problems, either."

When her hand moved to her belt, his eyes followed with lightning precision. A moment of silence passed before he found himself uneasy and nervous. He kicked at the dirt with one of his hind legs, snorting loudly as he weighed his options.

"Give me three good reasons to let you stay, and I might." He knew that his reasons for her to leave were weak, but he didn't think she had anything better lined up. They had never seen her in these areas, and his people had gathered from them for ages. SHE was the outsider, not them. SHE was the new variable, and she would be treated like one. At least until he had an idea of who and what she was.

Azele rolled her eyes at his response. He could have tried just asking who she was, but no. He had to resort to threats, anger, and violence. Honestly, how was peace ever formed in this world. Running a hand through charcoal hair, she pulled the tie loose. It was irritating, and now that she was being scrutinized by this stranger, she felt like hiding. It fell over her face lightly, blowing gently in the breeze. She continued to regard the stranger coldly, following his movements carefully.

"Your friends look like they're moving away from the confrontation.. so I feel as if we're probably evenly matched," She mused sarcastically, rolling chocolate colored eyes at him. Azele wanted to fire back a witty response to his horrible comeback, but she bit her tongue. She watched closely as he kicked at the dirt, and then mused he was just as uncomfortable as her. With a sigh, she shrugged her shoulders.

"Our tribe is looking for a new home, currently. We're just passing through. I came to gather herbs, as I am the apprentice of our healer.. and a few of our elders are sick from the journey, but I forgot what they were called." Hey, honesty was the best policy, right? Maybe her admitting she was merely a healer apprentice would make the large beast seem less threatened. "Besides, you're twice my size, and I'm a zebra. What do you have to be afraid of? I'm no predator," Herr voice was a scoff.

Askari flared his nostrils as he watched her loosen her hair, finding it somewhat comforting. Though she had a bitter personality (or maybe he brought it out of her with his prickly personality), she had a voice that soothed. Her responses first drew a haughty huff from him, but then he looked over his shoulder to the group that was moving away. As she continued, he slowly brought his eyes back to her, actually finding her story to be interesting and seemingly believable.

"Size matters not in this world," he grunted, finding that the first thing he wanted to respond to. "A single lion can kill one of us, as can a hyena. Though we tower above them. Strength is not defined by physical matters alone." He sighed and rested the spear across his shoulders, handing his hands limply over it by his wrists.

"What happened to your last home?" He tipped his head, but decided against waiting for an answer. "If your people need healing, you can come with us back to the tribe and ask our shamans." He squinted, not sure if he meant his offer. After a short pause, he relaxed his face and flicked his tail over his legs, flies biting at him.

Azele narrowed her eyes at him as he released a huff, slightly irritated by the air of condescension it held. She ran a hand through her hair nervously as she pawed the ground absently with a front hoof. She let him go on his small little rant about size, and had to not in agreement.

"I guess you are correct with that.. but I promise you, I'm not capable of hurting you," Her tone was a laugh now as she tried to picture herself fighting this creature. He obviously was some form of warrior, looking at his tone, posture, and the spear he carried on his back. All the zebra carried was a knife on her belt, and it was purely for collecting herbs more efficiently. She could fight well enough, but had never been trained to do so. Azele would be no match for a seasoned warrior. Her eyes widened slightly at his offer, slightly taken aback.

"A wildfire took our territory and our home. We plan to return after the rains.. but until then, there's no way we could possibly continue living there." She said softly, thinking about the event, but she inclined her head slightly, acknowledging his courteous offer. "I wouldn't want to trouble you or your tribe with that, stranger, but I would greatly appreciate it." Azele flicked her gaze up at the man, a smile touching her lips.
