They're pets.

You can have up to six per beetle den. You have to feed them while they are in larva stage (you can find herbs while exploring or buy them at the beetle grounds). When they reach adulthood, you can train them. Males can pvp against other males. Females can breed. There's a huge selection of beetles, from common to rare, so you never know what you'll find while exploring. They die around 24 months.

EDIT: I believe common beetles have 10 stats, special beetles come with more than 10 stats.

Yes! You can put them in the TC. A lot of people do that- but you should probably find out how much each beetle is worth as it varies. Common ones probably sell pretty cheap, but rarer onces can selling at pretty high prices (just saw one with a buyout of 800SB).
