Mugumu Pride History

King Kajetan was the founder of the Mugumu pride. Born into a brutal pride that strived only for victory against their enemy, it was a rough start for the young king. Eventually Kajetan broke away from his birth pride and started his own, the Mugumu pride thrived under his rule and grew into a powerhouse.

After the rain of fire on All Hallow's Eve Kajetan was left with a glowing, stark blue coat. It took a while for his pride members to get used to the new look of their king but almost as soon as they did he announced his desire to depart from the Mugumu lands. His announcement was met with uncertainty, the lionesses were sure that the silver tongued troublemaker, Shida was behind his departure. The fiery lioness had orchestrated an elaborate plan to convince Kajetan that he was unfit to be king due to the violent mood swings that had presented itself after the appearance of the wraith coat. Shida assured Kajetan that her son was the best choice to take over as king, Limuko was not pride born but he had strong blood running through his veins.

Unwilling to put his pride at risk for facing the consequences for one of his outbursts Kajetan agreed to step down from his place as king and denounce himself. Many of the lionesses were skeptical of Kajetan's genuine desire to leave the pride. And his choice for an heir came as a surprise for everyone seeing as Limuko was not Kajetan's kin, in fact his mother, Shida, was an outsider herself. Most of the lionesses trusted his decision although Ruko thought it was more than a coincidence that sly, silver tongued Shida got to see her son ascend to the throne.

Limuko's reign was a rocky one. In his time as king he saw the Mugumu pride thrive, times were good for the pride. They formed a strong alliance with the Mohari pride to the north and food was plentiful. Despite this period of growth, within the pride a rift was forming. A group of lionesses questioned the legitimacy of Limuko's claim to the throne. The pride was split down the middle over Limuko being named king. It looked as if the Mugumu Pride would disband, the two sides were walking on ostrich eggshells around each other. Fights were breaking out left and right, and any attempt made by Limuko to assert his authority was quashed. It was looking as if the strong pride the wraith king left behind had crumbled in his wake. Luckily for Limuko, Ruko's death put an end to the quarrel, the opposing side was too devastated over the death of one of the founding lionesses to put up anymore of a fight. The maroon king regained control over the Mugumu pride and by the time he took his last breath a sort of weary harmony was established.

After Limuko came Ahmose. He was not of Limuko's blood but was descended from Ruko which, in the eyes of the Mugumu pride, made him more royal than even Limuko. When Ahmose (who was born Kuona) was still growing into his mane Kiya of the Anch clan visited the Mugumu clan. Ahmose was fascinated with the ancient culture of the Anch clan, he was granted a goodwill visit by Kiya and Limuko and after he returned from the year long trip Ahmose was a changed lion. Shortly after Ahmose’s return the maroon king passed on. There was a short struggle sorting out who had claims to the crown, but eventually Ahmose was determined to be the best fit and with his new title came a new regime.

The change was almost immediate. By the end of his first week as king Ahmose had put a whole new order into place, the Mugumu pride was no longer a democracy, it was a monarchy (closer to absolute monarchy). A hierarchy was put into place, and would be enforced. Though the pride still grew at a steady rate there was great inner turmoil. Eventually the majority of the lionesses left to form their own makeshift pride with Taka leading the way. Ahmose was left to fend for himself, unable to hunt or defend his territory he withered away to almost nothing. The proud king was saved by a kind Seer, Satiah and her small group of followers. The charitable lioness took pity on Ahmose and knew that there was a great leader within him. With the help of Satiah, Nefertiti, and Hatshepsut the dark pelted king managed to mend fences with most of the lionesses that abandoned him and by the time his reign as king ended the Mugumu pride was on the up and up.

Pharoah Khaba was a ‘paws off’ king. He hated the overbearing ways of Ahmose and disbanded the hierarchy system the previous king had put in place. This was met with some resistance as by now the older Mugumu girls had enjoyed the privileges that came with seniority. Though Khaba had much respect for Ahmose, he ran this pride poorly and it reflected in the dynamics between the lions. Trust was scarce and while the Mugumu gals had always been 'clique-y' this was an extreme, they had actually formed three clans within the pride and competed against each other for food, hunting right, etc. Khaba decided he needed to put an end to that immediately and while it would be difficult to bring them together as a unit, he was determined to go back to the glorious days of King Lumiko and Queen Hazina. Eventually his laid back nature won over the girls and they accepted his ‘health over heritage’ philosophy. Khaba knew he couldn’t accomplish is dream in his lifetime so he made sure to set up the pride in a way that would allow his predecessor to carry out his ambitions.

Current King:

Tanga wasn't really the top choice of most as the future king, his pride mates felt he was a bit too gullible. The mottled king believes in second chances, (and third chances and usually fourth chances) he's always pretty quick to forgive. He's seen what happens to lions who hold onto bitterness and anger, that's not a life Tanga wants to live. He always tries to see things from other's perspectives, knowing that there's always at least two sides to every story.

The lionesses simply adore Tanga because he sees them as equals, the king even offers to do chores traditionally reserved for females (cub sitting is his favorite). Other kings see Tanga as weak, finding his openness and communication skills unnerving. While his heritage isn't as pure as Tauni's, his mother is a beloved member of the Mugumu pride. He never really felt out of place in the pride, thanks in part to Khaba's strange policy of putting health over heritage. Lineage was no longer a major factor in determining one's rank in the Mugumu and Tanga intents to keep it that way. The snobbish ways and prejudices of the pride are slowly melting away, giving arise to a new pride that strives for longevity.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Mugumu Girls

Criniera//The immortal warrior of the Mugumu pride. Criniera was blessed with immortality by the pride's greatest shaman, Satiah. It's the highest honor a lioness can receive and Cri is the first in the Mugumu pride to obtain it. As Queen Regent and the eldest lioness in the pride her word is essentially law. Though she rarely butts in on pride disputes (she prefers to let them sort it out amongst themselves) Cri occasionally will put her paw down and settle things. She's the Muuaji-Mkuu and organizes the hunting parties and tactics, when Criniera leads hunts the pride never goes hungry for long.

While the lioness has lost most of her prankster sprint she enjoys a good laugh and her anecdotes keep the young ones entertained for hours. Cri is a beloved member of the pride and will happily watch over the Mugumu lands for as long as she is needed.

Levita // Levita comes from a long line of royalty, dating back to when Lumiko was king. She takes great pride her her heritage and refuses to do anything other than lord over her fellow lionesses. When Tanga was named king she was the obvious choice for Queen. Her mother was Tauni, the pride's beloved queen and healer. Though Levita retained none of her mother's healing skills she is, a decent leader. Even if she puts bloodlines about everything else, her group of elitists are none to kind to Tanga's new way of ruling where ranks are based on merit and not birth right.

Ryder // Just like her mother Ryder is an elitist, she believes that those with royal bloodlines are inherently better than non pureblood and non pride born lionesses. As Tanga's daughter and Pharaoh Khaba's great-great granddaughter she believe's she's the cream of the crop. Where Levita is haughty. Ryder is just plain mean. She rarely has a nice thing to say about non purebloods and doesn't even bother speaking to those born outside the pride. Her half-sister, QT is her partner in crime and the two of them constantly antagonize the younger lionesses.

The adoring male by her side is Leland, Ryder's biggest fan.

Lydia // Lydia is the peacemaker of the group, she hates conflict and really dislikes Levita's pureblood agenda. She agrees with Tanga's beliefs that skills and abilities should determine one's merit and place in the pride. Being born outside of the pride Lydia arrived at the Mugumu lands when she was still a cub, her pride had been decimated by a series of almost supernatural disasters and Tanga was kind enough to take her in. She is forever grateful for his actions and is usually the one who breaks up fights between her adoptive sisters.

Chicken Bones // CB is a favorite among the Mugumu lionesses, though her mother has been shunned by Levita and her troupe, almost as soon as Chicken Bones was born Ryder took a liking to her. Levita resisted at first but CB is such a doll. Even though she's quite young she gives excellent love advice and her sweet nature is endearing.

Yaoundé // Due to her mother's betrayal Yaoundé can never be formally accepted into the pride. Since she is Tanga's daughter she is allowed to take the rank of Lead Huntress but she is grouped with the Kibui-Mzaliwa in title only. She eats and sleeps with the Nje-Ardhi. This great insult has lead to Yaou turning to little acts of rebellion to keep from lashing out at her pride mates. She frequently crosses into neighboring territories interacting with lions from other prides and even the occasional rouge or two.

Pride Ranks:

King/Pharaoh: Leader of the pride, has the final say on any decisions within the pride. Since Ahmose's rule the title of 'Pharaoh' has been used'. Though once Tanga took over he reverted back to the 'King' title . Position is currently held by Tanga.

Queen Regent: The pride's most respected lioness, the Queen Regent steps in as acting ruler when the kingship changes paws or when there is no current chosen Queen. Position is currently held by Criniera (who will probably hold it until the end of time).

Queen: Tends to the 'domestic issues' that arise in the pride, internal problems are usually quashed by the Queen before they reach the King. The Queen isn't always the King's consort, can also be a blood relation of the king. Currently held by Ryder.

Princess: Eldest daughter of the King or his preferred mate (depending on who the queen is). Currently held by Nadia.

Vizier/Advisor: Aids the king in his endeavors, position is usually filled by a non-lion. Other lions can have advisors though an advisor to a king is referred to as a Vizier. Tanga's vizier is A'mira an African polecat.

Pride Liaison: Well versed in the customs of neighboring prides and other species' clans. Accompanies the king on most duties that involves members of the other species. Currently held by Khara.

Lead Huntress: The most successful huntress, organizes hunts and strategies. Kin of the great champion Rameka tend to hold this position as the massive lioness produced abnormally large cubs. Currently held by Yaoundé .

Shaman: A lioness who either has healing abilities, is a Seer, and/or has studied healing techniques under a Seer's supervision. Seers are denoted by their pale eyes (typically white or pink) and inability to dream. The Mugumu Pride has no official Shaman. They 'outsource' to the Mohari Pride

Den Mother: This lioness deals with all aspects of cub rearing and nursing mothers, the den mother normally doesn't have litters of her own. Currently held by Mallika.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Outside Rifts:

Tande's Pack || This group of hyenas has had a long standing feud with the Mugumu pride. Ever since Kajetan tore apart Tande's mate in one of his infamous wrath rampages the two groups have never gotten along. As of right now there is a shaky truce in place, though as long as the pride stays away from the north side of the waterhole they can avoid trouble. Oddly enough all of Tande's direct descendants are named after her. Presently Tande XI, nicknamed TanXI (pronounced Tan-zee), is the leader of the pack.

Ikki & Co. || The arrogant elephant is a frequent thorn in the pride's side. He and his band of bachelors enjoy parading through the Mugumu lands, trumpeting and stirring up a ruckus, ensuring that any potential prey knows the pride's hunting schedule. During the dry season Ikki commandeers the waterhole closest to the den, refusing to let any animal drink and wasting precious water by bathing and splashing about.

The Pride of the Deep Glens
"Once there were brook trouts in the streams in the mountains. You could see them standing in the amber current where the white edges of their fins wimpled softly in the flow. They smelled of moss in your hand. Polished and muscular and torsional. On their backs were vermiculate patterns that were maps of the world in its becoming. Maps and mazes. Of a thing which could not be put back. Not be made right again. In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery."

vWYSmqT.jpg?1

Wander far enough west and you will find a mountain range trapped in a thick jungle, the air humid and difficult to breathe in. Brave the outer ridges and the center that dips into an ancient glen, closed off from the outside world since the ancients walked the land.

The center is difficult to get to; go far enough up and you will see a great body of water that sinks into the middle as if pressed out of the earth. The jungle that surrounds the lake, however, is suffocating and will tangle you as you try to break past its barriers. The canopy becomes thicker and thicker the closer you get to the center, so much that it blots out the sun and plunges the place into a perpetual night. Biting bugs and hungry creatures lurk here, silent as the shadows that they cast, ready to make wanderers that have survived this long a meal.

Here alive the rejects, the revered and the royal. They come from all walks of life, the first of them brought by the First King, Mercurius, who was guided to the Deep Glens by a dragonfly that whispered in his ear.

2taVwQA.png
Aristophanes the Sage (Second King)
A young cub who was abandoned to the Deep Glens, Aristophanes was accepted into the pride by Mercurius, the First King. A thoughtful soul who craved the great mysteries of the place he called home, he spent his youth as a scholar. But when Mercurius disappeared into the night, Aristophanes was the only one left to take the crown. However, a strange cub that calls himself Asbeel has recently made his way to the Deep Glens. His paws scorched the earth where he tread and, with eyes of fire and a voice deep beyond his years, the cub announced that he, the Angel of Ruin, will bring an end to Aristophanes' reign.

Worried for the future of his pride, he is the first king from the Deep Glens to seek out an alliance. Currently, he is in negotiations with King Tanga from the Mugumu Pride.

- - - Important History - - -
From the planes of a mysterious western land, Mercurius the Fortunate came upon the place during his lone wanderings, directed here by a dragonfly. He would not give the place a name; it already had one and the vast fjords, old as time itself, whispered it to him on the wind. So here the nomadic lion would create a pride of other vagabonds, among them the Holy Trinity who called the ancient lands home and the Grand Seers who peered into time.

Mercurius ruled humbly; he was a wise leader, a great ruler, an enigmatic beast, but he had never thought of himself as a king. The lion even went as far as to say: "I am no king, no royalty. I am but a weary traveler." He took especial company with Moana, an elderly lioness who proved herself just as wise, though not quite as mysterious.

But his reign, though it brought plenty, would not last long. One morning, the pride awoke to find their King having disappeared. He left in the night, following the wind as he had done his entire life, leaving the small pride without a word. Even Moana heard nothing of his departure. There was then the question of who would lead the pride going forward, and the beautiful Prosperpine tried to rally the other lionesses into having her own son, Armârôs , be crowned. Ultimately, the responsibility fell by default upon the shoulders of Aristophanes the Sage, a young male the pride had found abandoned to the Deep Glens as a cub.

Aristophanes, Second King of the Deep Glens, was a scholarly figure who valued knowledge above all else. He was kind, soft hearted, and was fond of long, meandering walks through the jungle that he called home. Many of the lionesses fawned over the worldly king, and he had become quite accomplished by the time of Moana's death. But the gods would be good to him, and with her death they sent Felicitas. She was a young lioness bearing uncanny resemblance to the First King, claiming to be her only daughter who came down to him under the stars.

But Aristophanes' fortune would soon run out. In his old age, a cub presented himself before him and his council. His paws scorched the soil and grasses upon which he stood, his eyes burning like opal fire and his voice deep, booming like no lion the King had ever heard before. "I am Asbeel, Angel of Ruin. I was dreamt by Mercurius, First King of the Deep Glen. I come to lay waste to your reign."

- - - Prominent Roles - - -
King || The leader of the pride, the title of "King" can be given, won or stolen by either lion or lioness. They are often accompanied by a familiar.

True Heir || Often held in high regard and considered blessed by the gods, the True Heir is a direct descendant by blood of the First King, Mercurius the Fortunate. He or she takes on much of the pride's decision making, is oftentimes confident to the king and is first to be protected in the event of conflict.

Heir || A dangerous position, the Heir is slated to take on the role of King once the previous passes. They are often rigorously trained, but are targeted by any enemies of the pride. Being named Heir does not guarantee they will make it to kinghood. So far, the Pride of the Deep Glens rarely, if ever, name an heir.

Adviser || A very knowledgeable lion or lioness, often an elder, they must be well versed in the pride's history, culture and stories. They often lead ceremonies and are given a place of respect. This role is most commonly taken by the True Heir.

Grand Seer || They are told apart from the rest by their jet coloured eyes. A lion or lioness with the greatest ability to part the veil and peer into the future and past, oftentimes taking advice from ancestors to pass onto current generations. They have varied, powerful magical abilities and are often talented herbalists well versed in medicine.

Lead Huntress || The pride's most talented huntresses, there may be up to two at a time. She will lead her own picked team on excursions to find and kill food for the pride.

- - - Minor Roles - - -
Huntress || A common working role within the pride, their successes will dictate how respected they are among their peers. They are often picked by the Lead Huntresses at a young age and brought on excursions to be trained.

Seer || Told apart from the rest by their jet black eyes, they answer to the Grand Seer. These lions or lionesses often have minor abilities in medicine, herbs, fortune telling and old ceremonies. The most talented will be taken under the Grand Seer's wing to be trained as a replacement.

Broodmother|| A lioness (or more rarely, a lion) tasked with guarding the young of the pride. She is often relegated to the dens to keep an eye on piles of cubs and assist expecting mothers.

- - - Other Roles - - -
Familiar || Often a non-lion animal that serves as a companion or adviser to a lion within the pride. Familiars are most often seen among the leaders, but they can find companionship among any of the members.

Tigers / Tigresses|| The Deep Glens are the ancestral lands of the tigers, who have dwelled here long before the lions set paw on their land. They never think of themselves as part of the 'pride' and almost never meddle or take part in the politics. However, because they so closely share the land, their paths do cross and affairs are sometimes intermingled.

- - - The Pride - - -

- - - News At A Glance - - -
Newest at the top.

The Fluffball Invasion - The Mugumu Pride and the Pride of the Deep Glens coming together for the first time, with an excuse of a fluffball hunt. Hopefully it goes well.

A New Alliance - King Tanga and King Aristophanes meet to discuss a potential alliance.

- - - Current Important Figures - - -

Asbeel - The Forsaken, Angel of Ruin || He says he was born out of a dream by the First King. His paws burn like fire and scorch the earth wherever he walks, his demeanor cruel and his chest void of a heart. He first arrived at the Deep Glens as a cub and presented himself in front of the Second King and his court. Aristophanes banished him to the darkest parts of the jungle to never be seen again, but he's been biding his time. Now a grown lion, he is ready to make a reappearance.

Skadi - The Ghost, Adviser to Asbeel, Harbinger of Winter || Her icy heart compliments the burn of Asbeel's paws well. She was born out of a blizzard, her pure white pelt cool to the touch despite the heat of the jungle. Considered an ill omen by her previous pride, she was cast away and found her way to the Deep Glens, starving and practically dead on her feet. Asbeel welcomed the scorned lioness and nurtured her cruelty.

Eurydice - The Fairest, Daughter of Proserpine || Eurydice was only a young cub when her mother, the legendarily beautiful but wicked Proserpine, succumbed to her old age. Evidently, Eurydice inherited her mother's beauty, but not her wicked heart. She has proven to be gentle, full of a grace her mother was never able to obtain, and a capable hunter even as she pounced on mice as a cub. Now she seeks wisdom, following Aristophanes on his long, meandering walks through the thick jungle and listening to his rambling philosophies on life. She also takes up companionship with Felicitas, only daughter of the First King.

Felicitas - True Heir, Princess of Great Fortune || Felicitas is the pride's True Heir and main Adviser, the only known daughter of the First King. The gods that had once given him much favour now watch carefully over her, and so she is revered within the pride. She makes herself loyal to the good of the pride and not to any King. However, she is a gentle and dignified soul who believes it is her task to make sure the Deep Glens remains a haven for the lost, the riffraff and the unwanted , just as her father had originally intended.

Saturn - Grand Seer, Abyss Gazer || Daughter of Mars and an unknown lion, she was born shortly after her mother arrived at the Deep Glens and inherited her powers. She was expected to be the first seer who would not be banished from her original pride. She holds a deep love of Aristophanes for his kindness and his scholarly pursuits. She is mother to Sylphide and Lavandières, both seers in their own right.

Sylphide - Seer, The Burning One || Daughter of Saturn, Sylphide was the first among the second generation of seers to be born into the Deep Glen. She had never known the strife her mother and the older seers endured for their particular talents and lives a very peaceful life under King Aristophanes, Second of the Deep Glen. Her powers are particularly strong, rivaling even her mother's, and she's first in line to become Grand Seer when Saturn passes. However, she is cold and distant, seeming to take particular delight in ominous predictions.

Lavandières - Seer / Medic, The Drowned One || Daughter of Saturn, Lavandières gaze often seems cold and uncaring, but she is rather soft once she grows acquainted. Her powers to part the veil of the universe pales in comparison to her sister, but her uncanny talent to recognize herbs and use them for medicine has made her indispensable, even if her bedside manner is lacking.

Chanda - Tigress, Last of Her Kind || Though not part of the pride itself, Chanda is the first tiger of the Deep Glens to have grown up alongside the lions. She grew up with the other tigers having a distinct distaste for the pride and has inherited that alongside her stripes. She is hot headed and perhaps a little immature, but she needs to get it together soon; with the older generation of tigers aging, she is soon to be the last of her kind.
