Lau Pine State University & Plot

This state university resides between a 10 minute walk from the ocean shore, and a beautiful, regional park of natural landscape full of wildlife, bike, dog and horseback-riding trails. It’s the perfect university and has a high acceptance rate! The university population is small, only about 4157 undergraduate students and 387 graduate students… Why wouldn’t any small-college seeking freshman want to go here? The only reason - the MS stamped/slashed everywhere. In the last few decades, the worst thing for any college/university is to have “MS” stamped across its name. ‘Mixed Species’. What this means for the humans, the 70% majority? They have to share what’s ‘rightfully’ theirs. What this means for the rest of us? The “others”? It means one of the few universities where we have some rights. Who knows how many, but who really cares? It’s someone we can GO, and beggars can’t be choosers. We are the 30%. The 11%, 11%, 8%. Some of us are humans, and some of them like us for who we are, but how do you tell the difference at face level? While we can’t all be powerful and have non-human abilities, who’s REALLY the powerful ones if the physically powerful minority is being herded like sheep by the physically powerless?

So despite all the speciesism in our world... you could say a lot of us don’t make it - or have the money - to go to a university like this. If you do, you blend in best you can and try to stay out of sight and mind to graduate and get out. Sometimes, if you can hide yourself well enough, you can even pass as human..that’s the best route to staying hidden, but it’s painful physically, mentally, and emotionally.

More Info on the School and classes

The first classes of the day start at 8:50 and all classes go on for 2 hours. Last classes start at 6:50 and end at 8:50.

Classes are Monday/Wednesday, Tuesday/Thursday and Fridays are "Seminar Days". On Fridays, students can meet with their professors, study in their dorms/the library/with a group, or can work on group projects for certain classes.

On the weekends, students are allowed to stay at the school or go home as they please, but most of the class buildings are closed down on the weekends. The library and dorms are, of course, open 20/7. The library is closed from 1am to 5am and the part time helpers work 4 hours per shift.

Lykanth | Werewolf

Alpha is usually a senior...almost always a were, UNLESS the alpha’s chosen partner is human, but that is extremely rare, and a good omen when humans accept lykanths knowingly. NEVER a different supernatural. They have the strictest of the rules, and the rules have been in place since their grandparent's fathers times before they were outed. Told apart from other students by their short tempers, habit of breaking things when upset (enhanced strength in human form), and strong senses even while in human form. Stand on four paws in were-form. They have mastered a full transformation and shift easily from wolf to human, appearing as little more than an over-sized wolf and can be mistaken for their smaller, more primitive cousins. Their bite will not turn a human into a werewolf, despite what many humans seem to believe. They are intelligent and in full control of themselves in either form. Lykanths have a sense of smell that is second to none.

Lykanths cannot be created, only born. Lykanths are able to transform almost from the moment they can walk. They age similarly to humans (in human form), though their wolf form ages achingly slowly as a result in their younger years. They experience lengthy lifespans so long as they continue to shift, staying simply in human form at almost all times (similarly to if they rejected being lykanths and tried to live as a human for all their life) will give them the lifespan of the average human (about 70-80). Lykanths that shift daily stop aging in appearance by the time they are 30-40 years old and can reach beyond 65 years still in their prime. Lykanths are undoubtedly strong, but still mortal and can be killed by old age (200 at the most), injury, or illness. They have retractable teeth and claws, but keeping them retracted for too long will cause pain and extreme discomfort.

Lykanths. {pronounced Lie-can-th} More Info on ‘Ly’kanths’ that i used for inspiration -- Lykanths are an ancient species that have been classically considered as “mythological” or “extinct” until 177 years ago, when the first “open werewolf” outed himself on national television. The man’s name was Harold Listan, a blackmailed politician whose 2 year old granddaughter’s life was being threatened by a radical group of lykanths that believed if he revealed himself his political career would be ruined while other lykanths would be safer by moving further into hiding.

Vampires

Small coven led by the oldest of the group. They have a few rules that are set in stone but everything else is more of an as it’s experienced sort of setting. Told apart from other students because of their exaggeratedly pointed teeth, pale skin, and when they carry around bloodpacks. They do not drink human blood (or at least most) and instead have found the substitute - pig's blood. They can eat other items, but cannot digest anything not made primarily with pig/pig's blood in it. They have enhanced speed and can feel specific things about people. This is how they can tell who, or what, is around them.

Vampires can be created or born, though all born vampires have very low fertility. They aren't quite infertile, it's just very hard to conceive. Many vampires often end up marrying humans that will accept them (or don't tell them) to procreate and while this has some vampires worried that the lines are severely diluted from centuries passed, it has brought the vampire population back from the brink of extinction. They never quite stop aging, but age much slower than they appear after around age 18 (i.e. A 26 year old vampire in the rp will look about 20-21). Because they age slower, a lot of the vampires that would rather appear as human as possible in the rp may have actually taken several years off after high school to seem the age they are trying to be (i.e. so a 22 year old vampire appears to be about 19). There are people out there that make a living hacking government records, IDs, etc by changing worried vampires' ages to about how old they look to pass them off as human easier.

Vampires (More on the story the original vampires were based upon) -- thousands of years ago, vampires were born from a curse set on by the greek god Apollo. A small gathering of Grecian towns that worshiped him and his twin Artemis were cursed after they angered the god. The blood suckers went into hiding for many centuries, while their former fellow humans passed stories about them. Back then, the humans passed on the knowledge of vampires, but after a few centuries...they became simple folklore stories. The folklore developed some simple lies along the way, sightings, claims, but the majority of the stories were exaggerated truths. Back then vampires couldn't be seen in light, they had extreme speed and some strength, their appetites only sated by human blood, they became sick from garlic, and they couldn't come into contact with anything holy, (but it was sacred Grecian items, not things like crosses).

Kynanth | Weredog

They have a small band of buddies - no real leader. They have a hierarchy, but it’s constantly changing and they don’t have a set of rules. Commonly found ditching, getting into trouble, and often branded as delinquents. Told apart from other students by their habits of being too clingy, close, or rubbing and sharpened senses in human form. They do not share as much of the lykanth's level of enhanced strength, but they do share some strength and a pinch of vampiric speed. Kynanths have an amazing sense of smell, second only to their lykanth cousins.

Kynanths are born and cannot be created like vampires. They age like humans for a decent portion of their lives and don't experience their first shift until they are roughly five years old. They continue to age normally for a time, though their canine forms grow considerably slower and their human forms generally stop aging in appearance between 35-45 years old. They have longer lifespans, but can still die from old age (cap 150 years), diseases or being injured. (18-26 their canine forms are two to two and a half years of age in appearance). They have retractable teeth and claws, but keeping them retracted for too long will cause pain and extreme discomfort.

Kynanth. {pronounced Kin-in-th} More Info on ‘Kynanths’ (empty) -- Kynanths are a younger species than their distant Lykanth cousins and vampire allies, having existed for a much shorter time period (reason for decreased percentage in info). Because of their shorter history, Kynanth were-forms are usually mixed breeds - if purebred or near purebred, they are likely inbred due to smaller gene diversity. Despite the species’ general dislike for rules/restrictions, some are betrothed young to similarly aged kynanths to keep the family’s instincts/genes from dilution (usually done with well established kynanth lines and/or wealthy ones). Through the generations kynanth forms now take on a bit more of what breed they are, however most still resemble/have the blood of mixed breeds.

Humans

The rulers of this world. We have the rights, and everything the Others have now is thanks to our mercy. Some of our own don’t think we need to beat them while they’re down, but what can we say? If we let them back up we’ll be done for. So we beat them while they are down and NEVER give them the chance to get back at us. It’s not very pretty, and they’ll be doubt...but this is the ugly truth, and we need to stick by our decisions, or we’ll suffer greater at their hands...and- paws-, I guess?

If you have a relationship with a different species, your best idea is to hide their species and help them to pass off that they are human. Lots of separate species try to be in relationships and pass themselves off as humans when they are with their human companions.

Things to keep in mind!

‘MS’ schools have a big price tag for any non-human entrants, like you’re paying to go to a private school, or an in-state person paying out-of-state tuition - this isn’t a private school. So for non-human chars they likely are in severe debt right now and have full time/multiple part time jobs alongside going to school unless they were wealthy to begin with, which most of the ones attending would be anyway.

Non-human species do not have nearly as many rights as humans, so beware of the cops & interactions with spiteful/speciesist humans!

All weres share a sort of mental link when in canine form so the pack can speak freely with one another when in close proximity. When interacting with humans they will need to communicate through barks and body language like your average dog until they return to human form. In human form they cannot access this mental link, only canine to canine. The link CAN go from canine > human, but not human > canine. Human form weres can "hear" the mental link, but cannot respond through it - they must speak/gesture/etc aloud/physically.

Clothes do not poof in and out of existence when weres change forms. They will rip or be severely stretched if a werecanine changes forms with them on. It is recommended you take them off and hide them if you change form to go 'running'.

Weres can sniff each other out and smell vampires, vampires can't smell so much as feel. Vampires feel other supernatural beings around them, and can pinpoint them by the feel of their auras - every species has a specific pulse about them, the canines scent this and the vampires feel it.

Story that Lykanth (and later kynanth) evolution was derived from...so basically folklore of forbidden crosses/hybrids of humans and wolves that grew into lykanths
