Ah, June. A wonderful month, full of... heat. And water. And more water. It had gotten to the point where cubs were now in danger of being washed away from their dens, and King Gilbert--after hastily pulling one of his own from the raging waters--had decided to just put his paw down. The Sangomas were not doing enough to help this, and whatever lion spirits that controlled these waters needed someone to tell them what exactly they were causing.

Gilbert padded quickly through the muddied savanna, letting out a loud roar when the Sangomas came into view. He chuffed under his breath, obviously agitated, looking for the queen Sangoma.

His roars had attracted attention from the other, working Sangomas, and they looked up at him, murmuring to each other in a tongue Gilbert didn't understand. He chuffed at them, letting out a low groan, trying to bring out the one in charge.

Finally, she emerged, looking... less intimidating in the daylight. She blinked down at him and he lifted up one of his front paws and pounded the ground with it, baring his teeth in frustration until she led him to a small hut, away from the worker's hut. She sat on the earth, bringing an odd-smelling root to her face and eating it, closing her eyes. King Gilbert swiveled his ears towards her, waiting, knowing she would understand him if he just waited.

A few moments passed, and Gilbert lowered himself onto his haunches, his eyes wide and fixed on the Sangoma. Her eyes suddenly shot open, the orbs looking much more... lion-like than before. "Why have you come to me?" she suddenly said, in a tongue he could understand.

"You need to tell me where to find the spirits that control the floods lie," he immediately said, looking her in the eye, desperate. "They are destroying everything, animals are dying! I need to do something or my pride will be in danger for this entire season."

The Sangoma hesitated, looking... concerned? scared? Gilbert could never exactly pinpoint human expressions. He held his breath, thinking she would just immediately turn him down with some cryptic shit the Sangomas usually say and send him home. However... "The spirits lie with Apedemak," she said softly, keeping her eyes trained on the fire between the two. "To find them, you must speak through him, into the Celestial Planes."

"Where do I... find Apedemak?" he said. He'd heard the name before, but never had a face to put to it.

"He will be closest to the stars at night, when the moon is brightest in the sky." She looked up at him, her eyes looking like embers in the bright fire before her.

He nodded, rolling the information over in his head, turning his back, ready to leave. So... a very large cliff, probably. I hope.

"Oh, and Gilbert?" she said, stopping him in his tracks. "You will make an acquaintance on the way."

-----

Gilbert had been travelling for approximately two days, now. He'd stopped for water and hunted for food when needed, but besides that, he was on his own. The Sangoma's words rang in his head, and he kept an eye out just in case someone turned out to be following him without him knowing.

He hadn't slept in the two days he'd been travelling, and the heat was getting to him.

He kept hallucinating the roar of an attacking lion, and constantly he would put on a large burst of speed, sprinting until it stopped. This went on for several hours, until the sun was very high in the sky.

Gilbert finally couldn't take much more and lowered himself to the ground, not even bothering to move to the shade of a nearby clump of trees or find dry ground, or even make a nest. He just lay down and allowed himself to slumber.

What he didn't know was his 'acquaintance' was much closer than he'd anticipated.

Gazing past a large tree, Blair swiftly {as fast as her chubby legs could take her, at least} scampered towards the decaying Acacia. Despite how old, and strong the tree looked, the heat was slowly getting to it. The familiar scent of the once lush hardwood had faded into something musky; it was definitely rotting. The dwarf couldn't remember the last time she had a decent drink. A good week, at least.

Pushing that thought aside, Blair stood up on her haunches, using her front paws to tear away at the decaying bark. No matter how small the meal was, she needed one, and soon. Almost immediately, the she-lion's blue orbs settled upon a fat looking grub. Hurriedly swiping it away from the rotting wood, she practically inhaled it, cringing as it writhed and wriggled on the way down.
After eating a few more grubs, she sauntered off, satisfied.

Blair knew she would need to eat again soon: one can not simply live off of bugs, in a time of need.
"Water," she murmured. Although the pride-lands were now plagued with floods, the she-lion hadn't had a proper drink in days. She knew those waters were dangerous, especially for someone with such... a handicap, when it came to swimming.

Cautious gaze settled upon a muddy wetland, Blair loped her way over, leaning down and taking a good, much needed drink. After lapping at the muddy liquids for a good three minutes, the feminine jumped as a low rumble echoed around her. Almost immediately, Blair assumed it was her former king. He found her, hadn't he?

"No, no, no!"
Lifting herself up and onto her paws, the dwarf sprinted off, unknowingly cascading in the direction of Gilbert himself, the one making the funny noises.
Once she found him, Blair mentally scolded herself. How paranoid could she be?

"Is that comfortable?" She asked suddenly, warily taking a step towards the slumbering king. He seemed to be asleep: or maybe he was having a stroke of some sort, Apedemak forbid those awful noises.
"Do you enjoy having mud up your nose, smart one? You must get all the lionesses with that look, right there. I'll need to try it, myself."

The black and white king heard a lion's voice through heavy sleep, and his ears swiveled as he dragged his way towards consciousness. "Mm... Wha...?" he managed, his mouth very dry and his nose clogged, full of mud. He attempted to halfheartedly snort the wet earth out of his nose, barely able to lift his head.

He blinked the eye not covered in mud at the small lioness, his purple eyes shining brightly in the godawful sun. "Who... are you?" he asked, trying to sit up and failing the first time, clearly dizzy and out of all kinds of sorts.

He shut his eyes tight against the sun, facing the ground as he tried to collect himself. "I apologize," he rasped out, looking as if he were about to collapse again in the middle of speaking. "I... am I encroaching on your territory?" He looked at the lioness in concern, the question seeming to be genuine despite his obvious... delusional disposition.

After figuring out the large brute was in fact, alive, Blair took a good step back, not wanting to provoke him in any way. With her luck, he'd rip her throat out, or worse, flirt with her. Ergh. The dwarf watched Gilbert for a good second or two, stifling a laugh as he wriggled about, like a fish out of water.
After she put on a straight face, Blair continued. "Nobody, really. My name's Blair. I've been alone for..." she glanced away, realizing it might be safer to lie about her situation.
"-for a while now. Living on my own, y'know? Anyways, no, this isn't my territory. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if we were both trespassing. I did smell a brute like you, a couple hundred yards to the east."

After rambling for a while, the she-lion quickly became aware of Gilbert's state of mind.
"Oh, hey? Are you okay? You should really drink something. I can go try to find some food for you, as well. You're not looking too good."
Despite the fact Blair had just met the king, she most definetely wasn't going to let him whither away at her paws. Hiding his body would be too much work for someone like her.
Okay, no. All jokes aside, Blair wouldn't let someone like him perish: especially because he hadn't killed her... yet.

OOC:
Sorry for the late response! I've been out all day. I should be on for a while now. Also, I apologize for my shitty sense of humor. Just trying to keep this lighthearted, is all. :>

Gilbert struggled to get to his paws, his legs shaking with effort. "No, I... I'm fine," he insisted, the lie leaving a bad taste in his mouth. Or maybe it was the mud.

He tried to take a step forward and immediately stumbled, hitting the wet earth with a sickly fwack noise. He groaned, trying to prop himself up again. "I... Maybe not," he said, looking at her. "Would it be too much for me to accept your offer of food?" He winced internally, disliking asking others for help. It wasn't that he thought he was better than everyone, it was that he thought he was a bother to ask.

His exhaustion and the heat finally caught up to him again and he began to pant heavily, his chest heaving between his paws. He wasn't thinking about lashing out at the dwarf--she was, after all, offering help--he just wanted to continue on his mission.

OOC: sorry for my late response! i've been in and out of weird situations all week and just now got the chance to respond, sorry
