He had been awake since dawn, his breath fogged in the air, eyes gazing up at thick overcast skies he felt oddly lonely at this time of day, weak and vulnerable. Like a dark mist winding around his gut. Deep missing. Winter was sharp in the air, the steely smell of snow adrift on the whisper of breeze.
He dropped his head to gaze at the short and shrivelled grass. He wasn't ready, he didn't know what to do, the weight of expectations compressed him, pushed his shoulders to the dirt when he tried to stand tall. Dawn painted the grey skies and he turned to see Maverick, always a sight for sore eyes,
his grey-black pelt untidy with sleep. The feeling snapped at the way Maverick gave him a small smile as Alec trotted to him. He had always found peace in other wolves company. "Maverick!" He quickly tried to cover his enthusiasm with a cough, then tried again to sound strong and intelligent. "The hunters awake soon, let's pray for good hunting." Click, boom. Nailed it. Maybe he had this after all.

Caribou? Impossible! But it was perfect, as the wind began to sharpen to a gale, a torrent of wild steely wind he looked around him. The day was becoming bitter, the snows would come, the caribou would leave. Alec's options were limited, 1: Keep the hunters out of the storm and make sure they were sheltered and warm. But the pack would starve. He gritted his teeth. 2: send the hunters out in hopes they could make a kill before the blizzard swept the territory. Another risk. He looked around the circle of gathering wolves. He had an idea, unsure if it was a good one he proposed it to the wind battered wolves. "I'll take a hunting patrol to the caribou, the willing can come with me, but the those who follow me past this camp should be aware that there is a threat to their lives."
