The aggression waned from the hyena's tense muscles with every word spoken. Soon, her ears fell back against her head and the fiery eyes that had once been burning simmered to nothing more than embers. Lichen had simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time, and it was as simple as that. The real killer had run off just before the female made it to the horrendous scene. She had been crouched, teary-eyed over the dead cub, when some of her clan-mates came upon her and turned on her immediately. She'd mixed much of her scent into the scene; they put the blood on her paws. Pale amber eyes raised from the dirt beside the cub's body and met the angry accuser's gaze.

"I have little to say; my own friends and family have turned from me without hearing a word I had to say first. I did not kill Larka," she said, voice quiet but somehow firm. Her ears twitched and Lichen clenched her teeth hard to avoid glancing towards the cub once more. It didn't matter anyway, the murder scene would forever haunt her mind, drenched in blood and dirt. With those pale, lifeless eyes of a pup she once tended to herself. Her voice was a growl of anger as she spoke her next sentence. "Unfortunately I was too late to see the real killer and the blood masked the scent for me, among other... distractions," she fell silent at her voice crack and swallowed with some difficulty. "I was... so s-sad, so angry... I just froze there. Until they found me." She had been letting her eyes flick between the other hyena and various particles of sand, but now she met her eyes again.

"I know how it looks, and I know I haven't done much to prove myself in this clan. But I'd never harm a pup. I'd never harm Larka!" She whined anxiously, and for the first time in a long time, she felt her short and wispy tail tuck against her belly.
