I have always been a fan of Norse gods and legends. The harsh cold environment, long winters, and endless summer days inspired a whole slew of unique and dangerous myths and deities. I'm by no means an expert on this subject, it's just a subject of interest to me, but seeing as how the new June event inspired a whole bunch of Egyptian mythology decors, I think it would be really cool to see more decors from the mythos of other cultures! A few that I think would be particularly interesting to see, and easy to represent on Lioden due to their association with certain animals or other natural things would be: DECORS - Sköll and Hati (two wolves who pursue the sun and moon respectively, when Ragnarök arrives they will catch their prey and turn the skies black) - Huginn and Muninn ("thought" and "memory", respecitvely. They are ravens who fly around the world and relay information to Odin) - Geri and Freki (two wolves who are said to accompany Odin) - Jörmungandr (son of Loki, a giant serpent who surrounds the world, eating his own tail. When he releases his tail, Ragnarök will begin. In some interpretations, he is simply a sea serpent who dwells in northern seas and takes part in fighting the gods at Ragnarök) - Fenrir (father of Sköll and Hati, son of Loki. A wolf foretold to kill Odin during Ragnarök, as large as a mountain and as strong as the gods) - Yggdrasil (also called the world tree or the tree of life, it is a gigantic ash tree that connects Earth to the cosmos) - Níðhöggr, or Nidhogg (a giant serpent/dragon who gnaws at the roots of Yggdrasil) - Eikþyrnir or Eikthyrnir (a stag which stands upon Valhalla) - Hræsvelgr or Hraesvelgr (a giant eagle who stands on the edge of the world and causes winds to blow when he beats his wings) - Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr and Duraþrór (four male red deer who graze at the branches of Yggdrasil) - Audhumla (a giant cow that nourished Ymir, the first giant, with its milk) - Sleipnir (okay this is a weird one. Long story short, Loki had to sabotage this guy, so he transformed into a beautiful mare and lured away the dude's stallion with his horsely beauty. They ran away into the woods and Loki didn't return for months. When he did, he was accompanied by Sleipnir, an eight-legged foal, who Loki had birthed while he was the mare. Sleipnir is Odin's horse, the best among gods and men) - Tanngrisnir (Snarler) and Tanngnjóstr (Grinder) (Thor's goats who pull his chariot. Thor also uses them for food; he can kill them, cook and eat their meat, and as long as their bones aren't damaged, the goats are resurrected the next day. One of the goats had a leg bone broken one night, and is permanently lame as a result) - Ratatoskr (a squirrel who runs up and down Yggdrasil to pass messages and gossip between the animals on the tree, namely the Nidhogg and the eagle perched on the tree) BACKGROUNDS - Jötunn, specifically the Frost Giants (Jötunn is a word used to describe giants and trolls in general sometimes, but I specifically mean the frost giants, who the gods are descended from and are foretold to eventually kill the gods) - Ginnungagap (a gaping void between the first original worlds) - Niflheim (the northernmost of the two first worlds, a world of darkness, cold, mist, and eleven poisonous rivers) - Muspell (the southernmost of the two first worlds, a world of magma, light, heat, and embers) - Ragnarök (the end times, where all mortal life will be extinguished and an enormous battle is waged between the gods and the warriors of Valhalla, and Loki with his children, armies of the dead, and frost giants, along with the fire giants from Muspell) - Fimbulvetr or Fimbulwinter (the beginning of the end times, an endless and unceasing harsh winter, the skies dark, and mortals driven to insanity by famine) Of course, this ignores the major gods of Norse mythology, but I don't know how Lioden's artists would best like to represent them, since they are usually depicted as humans. For what it's worth, Odin is associated with wolves, Thor with goats, and Loki with snakes. If there are any inaccuracies in my descriptions please let me know! Also feel free to add any more ideas or suggestions! |

I supported before but I forgot to comment: I LOVE this idea. Norse is one of my favorites, right next to Greek and Egyptian. I had a freak out when the new God of War game had Norse mythology. I need all of these, in fact, I need 20 of each. Another idea is Baldur for the Gods. He is my absolute favorite (and I loved him in GoW too ;w;). His spirit animal is the Golden Eagle. "Baldur, a god of war, nobility, beauty, schooling, and later, tragedy. Also known as Palter. “The Shining One”. Heir to, and son of Odin and Frigga, and married to Nan. Spirit animal is a golden eagle." List of Gods and Their Spirit Animals 0 players like this post! Like? |
