Groupies are a part of the May event, with the Championships. They’re involved in the storyline, as a way of spending the reputation you can earn - the wiki has proper details here if you scroll down.

They’re actually mostly female; the chance of male groupies is an optional feature, but even turned on it’s a relatively low chance compared to females. Bear in mind that female groupies are no use for heritage replacing kings though, because just like with regular NCLs, heritageless groupies cannot be sex changed.

They don't necessarily have them early. You can get a groupie in May and not roll over your account for a while. If you do not roll over no lion will age, get hungry, get bored, and food will not rot. This is called being 'Frozen' A lot of members will freeze their accounts to keep good lions or items frozen for a while. Some freeze young groupies for a few months before unfreezing to sell them for a much better price!

So they don't have them early, they just have groupies from last year, or years before.

I dont think its "getting them early" its more like they saved them from last may [if this correct] and they never rolled over on their side account meaning the lion never aged
