The main focus on this thread is surrounding lions being named COVID-19 or Coronavirus for starters. Other medical illnesses can be included too, depending on their context. Short and simple; disease names should not be allowed. This doesn’t mean banning a user who decides to use it as a ‘joke’. Simply a warning and a mod reset of their lion’s name should be fine. Code of Conduct 1.1b states “Users may not abuse, harass or in any other way purposely offend other users on site”. Some people think this is a joke, and that in itself is offensive. What may not be offensive to you, can be triggering and upsetting to other people. People on site could have lost family members to this/these illnesses and it shouldn’t be joked about publicly. It’s okay to joke once in a while with your friends in a group chat, some people use ill humor to cope. But a public place with 2000+ active users a day is not the space for it. The comments have discussed page after page that Lioden is supposed to be a get away from real life. This is even written in the Code of Conduct. Naming a lion whatever you want is within your right, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of others as someone in a response on this thread posted. This is not adding an automatic filtering system for names. That’s a bit extreme. Also, I want to add that the block feature does not solve everything. You can still see their kings on Leaderboard, in the May event next month, there’s a toggle button to see a block user’s post in the forums. Simply blocking them, does not eliminate the issue. We’re in a global pandemic with people dying everyday. And please know this thread has nothing to do with anything else besides being compassionate to other people who don’t find it as ‘funny’. Special thanks to Roxanne (#121082) for helping write this out. |

big, BIG support. as someone who has, quite literally, just gotten their test results back AFTER being tested positive, its pretty fucking insulting. i dont care if youre doing it for a meme, for the shits and giggles, or for the "im studying it!" bullshit. google is your best friend. dont bring it to a site that users tend to go to, to avoid this shit. "just block and move on" is just as bad as saying "stop being a sensitive little baby, grow a spine". fuck off lmao 0 players like this post! Like? |

apologies for a double post, but i got an update on messaging mods. we can, actually, message abbey about changing the ruling. if we get enough to possibly go through, expressing our concerns, maybe it will happen. image may be overly large, so [click] here is a screenshot of the mod message i got about the issue. 0 players like this post! I messaged Abbey a while ago asking why the names were allowed, and I got a response that basically said they're not offensive. Which is why this post went up. 0 players like this post! Like? |

No support, sorry. I get it. I do. My husband just had a series of seizures due to complications from COVID. It sucks. He works at a hospital so we're under mandatory 1 month quarantine. If I'm not sick, I will be soon. I have no idea what will happen. The people who think a pandemic is funny aren't ones I want to associate with. But there have been lions named Anthrax since I joined the site. Anthrax isn't funny either, but I'm not assuming those people think it is. It's, for some reason, a perfectly acceptable "edgy" name. Diseases are fair game for "evil" names. I've seen lions names variations on the black plague, smallpox, ect. Diseases are and have been a fair theme for naming. This situation blows, for all of us. But I can't see changing naming rules for it. 0 players like this post! Like? |

The thread is mainly around the COVID situation... it says that in the OP. "Other medical illnesses can be included too, depending on their context." Not will :/ 0 players like this post! Like? |

No support. I see it being the same as naming a lion "The Black Plague" or "Vlad The Impaler." Horrific in their time but fine names now. I don't know where you'd draw the line between things you find personally offensive and things that are fine if we start passing rules like this. 0 players like this post! Like? |

Should people not be allowed to name their lions things like Earthquake, storm, Hurricane, Forest Fire, Lightning, or flash flood just because people died from all of those? Of course not! That’s ridiculous, and furthermore people who name their lions that are not “mocking or making fun of” people who died during those events. They just think it would be cool to have a lion named after something so awe inspiring and powerful! So it might be with a name like Virus, contagion, disease, death, or pestilence! They are not necessarily making fun of the calamity and deaths that stuff like that has caused; maybe they just think Virus is a cool name. I don’t support because I could see this being carried too far - people may become unable to name their lions anything not on the same level as sunshine and butterflies. Lioden has events that include real problems, such as the poaching & wildfire events, and must realize that people can never truly be sheltered and have everything unpleasant removed. Even commercials and signs in these times may have references to Corona; Covid 19 is everywhere whether you like it or not and people have to adapt and carry on. It’s not a happy situation, I know, but just because people want to name their lions contagion or death does not mean they are making fun of suffering. Perhaps the lion is in fact a reminder of Covid 19 or other diseases and not intended to shock or “offend” people. 0 players like this post! Like? I'm going to disregard the first paragraph simply because I believe it's an overused argument and it really doesn't make much sense to compare Covid to earthquakes. Covid is not used because people are "in awe of its power," unless someone finds sick humor in that. The events that you reference regarding poaching and wildfire were implemented to shed light and bring awareness to things that are happening in the world today that people may not be aware of. The commercials you bring up, as far as the *majority,* are created to ask for donations to support charities that are helping the world through this difficult time. Others are bringing awareness to what is going on. I haven't seen one commerical that has made light of coronavirus or used it in any sort of humor. You simply can't say the same for people on LD who name their lions after Covid. Do you think naming your main lion "CoRoNaFlUfFeRs" spreads awareness? It absolutely does not! It's insensitive. I specifically asked that person why they named their king that and they said "because I can/for humor." Can you ask staff the same question: why did you implement poaching encounters? Their response will be the exact opposite. It isn't something they did for fun, it was something that was done to bring a horrible situation to everyone's attention; poaching. 0 players like this post! Like? |

there is still a huge difference between all of this. poaching does not affect humans. a pandemic does. while i agree that poaching is not good, it is not affecting humans in any way, shape, or form. we are not losing family and friends over poaching. we are losing family and friends over a pandemic. 0 players like this post! Even if the op is talking 'mainly about corona' its downright ignorant to brush off other disease related names when the thread itself is called 'disallow disease names for lions'. This is something that a lot of the people commenting here as supporters are looking down upon for no reason. I wont even bother to mention the obvious tension here and the belittlement of people who think otherwise by the people who support this thread. Regardless of this, as i've said before it's a no support from me. The people that have named their lions after viruses and diseases has been a thing for ages, and not only does it not make any sense to suddenly 'ban' or 'give warnings' for one particular disease name when there are tons and tons of disease names that are named after various things, just about everyone in the world is going through the coronavirus. To say that 'people are dying from this everyday' or 'this is something that shouldn't be joked about' or whatever else you wish to say about it as an argument (which isnt wrong) would be the same thing for any other disease name that you could come up with it, and yet people use names like that or based on that every day. People die from different things every day, people get affected by certain things that we dont/wont ever hear about. People have named lions after the black plague, to diseases such as the flu, and after many, many more diseases that many, many people go through and can die from, but are they affected by this? Not enough to make a thread centered around one name and variations of that name but you learn to just ignore lion names that you dont agree with. Regardless of how or where they show up, and more so if the name isnt specifically targeting you. And if you dont want to use the lioden features that are given to alleviate the situation of something that you dont like, then your efforts would be better placed in a suggestion about improving the block feature instead. And before you even think to tell me that the post isnt just about the corona, the point is that's exactly what the comments are defending it as, and comments can be considered as well in line of suggestions, if not by the admins/mods themselves, then by the people that you are trying to get to support this. Regardless, I dont see anything being done about this to shelter you guys from names that reference a world wide pandemic, when there are plenty of other things that are just as or even more deadly than it that get used as names or themes everyday. Let's see how you guys pick apart this one for your benefit. Edit: Spelling 0 players like this post! Like? Edited on 04/05/20 @ 18:26:22 by Anamani 252/500 gb (#77716) |
