If you're new to Battle Beetles, here's some basic information to get you started. If you're not new to them, you can ignore this post.
Battle beetles are living, intractable creatures, kind of like pets on the site. Not to be confused with silver beetles or gold beetles, the site currencies, or any of the event currency beetles.
*Important tip when buying beetles from me. If you're buying a female beetle, check the Wants section of the trade, or check the actual beetle. If the trade says she can't be bred anymore, then her breeding cooldown is going to last until after the beetle dies. You can also check the beetle's cooldown and age your self.*
Beetle Slots
To own beetles, you need to have enough beetle slots for them. Both larva and adult beetles use the same slots. If you beetle slots are full, you cannot breed your beetles, if you try to grab beetles in explore you'll always fail, and if you buy or are sent beetles, they will "run away" and be lost from the game.
You can see how many beetle slots you have on your den page, and buy more slots with GB. Beetles will appear in your Unsorted beetles category, and can be sorted into mounds, that you would need to build, if you choose. Beetles don't need mounds, its just for your convenience.
Larva
![larva.png](https://static.lioden.com/images/beetles/larva.png)
Battle beetles hatch from their eggs as Larva. All larva look the same, but the beetle's profile will tell you their species and colour, right from the moment they're born. Be aware that Larva need to be fed, or else they will die, and eat herbs such as Nut Grass or Striped Cactus.

![ubhubhubhu.png](https://static.lioden.com/images/items/Other/ubhubhubhu.png)
Larva cannot breed, or battle, and age up to adult beetles at 11 days.
Female Beetles
At 11 days, a female larva will age to a female beetle. Adult beetles do not eat and will not die of hunger. In some species, the female beetles look like the males, but in other species, such as the Dynastes hercules, the males and females look different.
Male Dynastes hercules

Female Dynastes hercules
Breeding
At 11 days old and older, females can be bred to beetles of the same species. Once bred, females will become pregnant and have a clutch of eggs the next day. You must HATCH the eggs to catch larva the day the eggs are hatched, or else they will all "run away" and you won't get any babies from the breeding. You have a chance at getting 1 to 3 larva from any clutch of eggs.
After breeding, females have a 10 day cooldown period, so be careful about breeding. You'll only be able to breed your female beetle twice in her life, so choose when you want to breed, and with which male, carefully, and don't forget to collect the babies.
Female beetles will die at age 31 upon role over and turn into a beetle item, which will look the same as the male beetle item.
![beetledynastesherculesspotted.png](https://static.lioden.com/images/items/Beetles/beetledynastesherculesspotted.png)
This means the last day your beetle will be alive is age 30, so the last day you can breed a female is age 29. If you breed a female at age 30, she'll die during rollover and lose the clutch of eggs.
Battling
Female beetles cannot battle, but they can however still be trained at the Beetle Training Grounds and earn stats.
Male Beetles
At 11 days, a male larva will age to a male beetle. Adult beetles do not eat, and will not die of hunger.
Breeding
At 11 days old and older, males can be bred to beetles of the same species. There is no limit on male breeding, males can be bred any number of times to any number of females as long as they are the same species, up until they die. The male beetles also have no breeding cooldown.
Male beetles will die at age 31 upon role over and turn into a beetle item, that looks like they did with a blue outline.
![beetledynastesherculesspotted.png](https://static.lioden.com/images/items/Beetles/beetledynastesherculesspotted.png)
This means the last day your beetle will be alive is age 30, so this is the last day you will be able to breed or battle your male beetle.
Battling
Adult beetles can be trained at the Beetle Training Grounds for 10 SB a session. Each beetle can only be trained once a day in either Move a Rock (for strength), Climb a Branch (for endurance) or Ground Race (for speed). If they're successful, they'll earn +1 in that stat, but it's a low probability, and if they fail, they gain nothing.
Male beetles can also be battled. Each male beetle can battle once every 15 minutes. An opponent is chosen randomly, and they battle each other in a small animation. There's no moves or choices to made, the battle just happens. If your beetle wins, you receive a small prize like 10 SB, a small amount of exp for your main male lion, or an herb, and if he loses, you get nothing. Male beetles also gain experience through battling and be leveled up.
Rarity & Where Beetles Come From
There are many species of beetle, and every species has a rarity. A species can be common, uncommon or rare. The rarity determines how easy the beetles are to find, or how expensive they are to buy from a shop.
Augosoma centaurus beetles are common, Dynastes hercules beetles are uncommon, and Goliathus goliatus beetles are rare.

![green.png](https://static.lioden.com/images/beetles/dynasteshercules/male/left/green.png)
![light.png](https://static.lioden.com/images/beetles/goliathusgoliatus/male/left/light.png)
On your beetle's profile page, it will say the species rarity in brackets next to the species name.
Within each beetle species, there are different colours, and these colours also have rarities of common, uncommon and rare. The colour rarities also have to do with how easy or difficult it is to find, but also determines some factors in what colours the larva are after breeding.
For Augosoma centaurus, there are 7 colours available; Black, Crimson and Dark are common colours, Blue and Red are uncommon colours, and Piebald and Iridescent are rare colours. Different species of beetles can come in different colours, and sometimes colours are different rarities among different species.

![red.png](https://static.lioden.com/images/beetles/augosomacentaurus/male/left/red.png)
![piebald.png](https://static.lioden.com/images/beetles/augosomacentaurus/male/left/piebald.png)
Your beetle's colour and its rarity in brackets, will also be listed on its profile.
Different species of beetles come from different places. Explore beetles can be found while exploring, if you choose to "Grab the beetle" you have a chance at getting a larva that will be 0 days old.
Some species of beetles are sold at the Gorilla Enclave for monkey teeth, and some are sold in the Oasis for GB, and these beetles are available year round as beetle tokens, that can be used to get a larva of that species.
There are also event beetles, which are available as tokens in event shops for event currency.
Items for Beetles
There are two important items that can be used on your beetles, and both of them can be bought from Monkey Business.
The first, is the Aging Pebble, that can be used to age any larva to 10 days, which means that after rollover, they'll become an adult beetle. This means you can skip the stage where you need to feed the beetle, and you don't have to wait to start breeding, training and battling.
![agingpebble.png](https://static.lioden.com/images/items/Other/agingpebble.png)
The other, is the Beetle Sex Changer. This item can be used on larva, or beetles that haven't been bred or battled, to change its sex.
Beetle Book & Beetle Death Items
The Beetle Book is a place where you can collect beetles. The book allows you to collect one male and one female, in every colour, of every species. Beetles must be alive to be added to the beetle book, and disappear into the book. You will not receive a beetle death item, and will no longer be able to train, breed or battle those beetles, they will be gone. To add a beetle to your Beetle Book, they must be unsecured and you must choose the "Add to Collection" option. If this option is faded, the beetle is already in your collection and you cannot add it again. Only adult beetles can be added, larva cannot be. There are some achievements you can get based on the Beetle Book.
When a beetle dies of old age at 31 days, it turns into a beetle death item. Species and colour will translate to the death item, but not gender. All of the death items look like the male beetle, with a blue outline.

![beetleonthophagusnigriventisopalescent.png](https://static.lioden.com/images/items/Beetles/beetleonthophagusnigriventisopalescent.png)
This is an item that will be added to your hoard and acts like any other item. It can be buried, traded and sold. Beetle death items can be collected, and some of them can be used in crafting, especially the Augosoma centaurus, Copris dracunculus, Colophon primosi and Proagoderus rangifer beetles.

Like with lionesses, there are three options to get rid of a beetle when they are unsecured (plus a fourth option to collect them as explained above). These options are "Release Into the Wild" which doesn't affect your karma and is similar to chasing a lioness, "Eat Beetle" which gives you negative karma like killing a lioness, and "Give to Kittengarten" which gives you positive karma like taking a lioness to the reserve. NONE of these options give you a death item. Only allowing your beetle to naturally age out to 31 days will result in getting an item. These other options will remove the beetle though, if you need to get rid of one. Alternatively, you can sell and trade beetles if you want to get rid of them.
