As to the game...well, it's all pretty subjective! I'd recommend reading back through the last few news posts to get a good idea of the brand new stuff - the community updates you can mostly skip since they're minor. You mostly just want the development update ones, and possibly event ones.

These days the official wiki (linked at the top right) is an incredibly useful resource too. It has pages on practically everything, and it's invaluable for things like base genetics (e.g. combo bases are probably new to you if you've been gone a long while??), monthly event info, full marking lists, etc. if you're looking for something specific there, the search bar and keywords are your friend :)

Browsing the TC regularly is another good way to get up-to-date with pricing and what kind of thing people are selling (and whether it's selling well or not - you can watch trades, to see if they get bought, for example).
