Personally I don't spend much money on exp items because I find the cost vs reward isn't really worth it - not unless you're trying to create a real stat monster king and earn the money back from extremely high studding fees.

The most effective (and cheap) way is just to battle as much as possible in Explore, either all enemies you come across, or if you're trying not to use all your energy battling then focus on those that tend to give the most exp (generally the hardest ones to beat, like elephants, rhinos, etc).

I usually also buy lucky feet when they're cheap - especially in April - and use them strategically to guarantee winning a battle against a high-exp enemy when I'm otherwise about to lose. That's more cost-effective than exp items imo.
