Karma affects which titles your king unlocks, and which encounters you will see in Explore (you can find out more about those specifically here).

You can raise and lower it by picking certain choices in Explore - the snake under the "Karma" section of this page can be paid a one-time 1000 sb fee to permanently reveal your karma gains and losses from Explore encounters (so it will say, for example, +2 karma at the end of the encounter text after you make a positive karma choice).

Killing lions (red button on their page) will also decrease your karma, while sending them to the nature reserve (green button) will increase your karma. You can similarly "eat" (- karma) beetles or "send to the kittengarten" (+ karma)
