The wikipedia has the other spelling of the word.

Chernobyl is the official translation of the word onto english, its not spelled that way because its spelled that way on Russian - in fact, on Russian its spelled more like Chiernobieel'. Soft Ch and soft L on the end. Chernobyl is more like a neutral "englified" version of its spelling.

If thinking about official translations, think Paris. In French, the name is spelled "Paree". But the official english translation is still spelled Paris. Japan in japanese language is spelled "Nippon", but I doubt readers would understand if people started writing Nippon instead of Japan. There really are many examples.

So, no support. Things shouldnt be renamed off from their official international translations to be more like their country's name, that will produce translation chaos if people start using different words for names. If they were, I cannot imagine how the names of some of the Gorilla Enclave decors would be spelled if they were changed to sound more like their country's spelling.

Well, my romanization skills arent great then, but It really doesnt matter how romanized versions of their name spelling sound; the official international translation is Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Read the examples about Paree and Nippon for why local names shouldnt replace the "official" international translations. If they did, it would be a translation chaos. Should we also replace Chinese in item names to Zhōngguó, which is China's local spelling?

The article on the wikipedia is not a reliable source and as a Ukrainian I can say that the title in this article is spelled incorrectly. Here is the official Ukrainian government website with the table for transliteration of Ukrainian. (Чорнобиль is how we write it in Ukrainian, feel free to check it yourself).

Also if you will simply tipe "Chernobyl or Chornobyl" in your search bar, you will find a lot of articles saying that Chornobyl is a correct variant. Chernobyl is a name used during the Soviet era when our nation was forced to speak Russian language and use Russian names for our cities (like a lot of people still use Kiev /wrong/ instead of Kyiv /correct/).

And also, if you trust wiki so much, you can go to the ChNPP website mentioned in the beginning of the article and see, that it also uses Chornobyl name, not a Chernobyl one.

It does not matter how its spelled on its local language; PLEASE, read my examples about Paree, Nippon and Zhōngguó. Those are all the local spellings of their capitals/countries and for their countries, they are correct, but not for international. If you write Zhōngguó, hardly anyone will understand you're referring to China.

Soviet Union hardly had any effect on the english-speaking word and what word is the official chosen translation for them in english. I can assure you that no english speaking countries took into consideration how its spelled in Soviet Union when they set the official translations for words.

That's not our place to be changing vocabulary words. If you disagree with official english translation of the word, you should write to London, to the english language vocabulary libraries to change it. But for now the official english word is:

Chernobyl. Dictionary, vocabulary checked, if wikipedia is not enough. It will produce issues with people not understanding what that name means, is Chornobyl a different place from Chernobyl in the dictionary? THAT is the issue. Chornobyl is not the word used in encyclopedias. Chornobyl is not the word listed on the vocabulary site. You expect people to intuitively know both spellings mean the same city? But even same spellings could mean different cities, so people are bound to mistake that spelling for another place.

No support, again. Sorry but that's just how its spelled in international usage. Regardless of what you think the "correct" version is. And trust me Sovet Union had 0% affect on the writing of English Vocabulary.

They "advised our offices in August 1997" and yet its still not changed in the official resourses in 2023? Apparently the advise was not heard to, but nontheless, I repeat - the official vocabulary still uses Chernobyl, and it WILL produce confusion with people if another spelling is used. Remember Lioden is a very international game, with people from a wide array of places playing here. Asian people play here. Arab people play here. African people play here. South Americans play here. All of these international players speaking different languages and needing a translation will be faced with a confusion of the name not matching the one listed in official, international vocabulary, still up at this point on wikipedia and vocabulary sites.
