They are adolescent males (or adult females), and players will usually patroll them for a long while to build up stats before kinging.

Another way to get stats with them, along side patrolling, is to feed them stat food (Egg Yolk, Honeycomb) and to play with them with amusement items that can give stats (Dry Palm Leaf, Lovebird Plumage, Ostrich Fluff, etc.).

But I find it more of a hassle, personally, and usually just patrol mine.

Edit: You can also just skip all that and buy one from someone who has already put in the work and is selling one. But the more stats they have the higher they cost, so it's something to keep in mind.
