So applicators, like you said, are items that you can use to change your lion's appearance. There are base applicators, which change the base of your lion, and markings applicators, which apply a marking to a chosen marking slot. That's really the only thing they do! There are also eye and skin applicators as well.

You can get applicators in different ways. Some applicators are able to be crafted in Monkey Business, while others can be purchased from different shops. Some markings/bases tend to be more or less popular, but you should go with what you think looks cool.

Here is the wiki page for all of the applicator bases, and here is the wiki page for (most) of the applicator markings. There's also the oasis marking applicator that you can use to apply a custom marking to your lion.

If you want to test out an applicator, I suggest importing your lion into the Wardrobe to test it out.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money, I think the easiest way to get applicators is to buy them from the monthly shops. There aren't any marking/base applicators for August, but there are a lot for September and October.
