Grandpaws die at 17, but you can retire him if you don't want him in your pride.

And males are aged down to 8 years if they are over 10 years old when kinged. And if they are an adolescent when kinged they will age up.

Old kings, once retired, become Grandpaws for a year ( = 12 days). They are auto-aged up to 16 because retirement ages vary, and they then die a year older at 17 and automatically go to your dynasty. Or if you don't want them sitting around for that time you can manually send them to dynasty earlier anytime after retiring. I normally just do that immediately tbh since I'm not bothered about the whole grandpaw thing. There's more info about it here.

As for the new king's age, that's because lions older than 10 years (so 10 years 1 month and upwards) are auto-aged down to 8 upon being kinged. That's basically so they have some decent time to actually be king before they're too old and have to be retired. This means you can king a male right up to 14 years 11 months (at 15 they risk dying of old age, so not recommend to leave it later than that), and as king he goes back down to 8.
