This guide has helped me out a lot on statting lions.

In short, if your cub is male, you want to patrol him as often as is possible for as long as possible. Lions start to lose their stats by age 15, so you want to king your submale by 14 years, 11 months.

If your cub is female, have her hunt once she's old enough. GMO Chickens will refresh her hunts, and you can refresh her hunts using SB. However, this does mean paying. It took my early NCLs nearly to the end of their lives to get above 1k stats.

Either way, make sure you do cub training every day from 5 months to 11 months, then when they're adolescents, send them hunting/patrolling for additional training. You need a minimum of 75% training for the cub to gain stats upon aging to an adult.
