So! I have a question- I would like to make some Avatar (James Cameron) decor, but don't know if that's okay. I did do some research about copyrighted rights for the movie, however it seems there is none and while I find official art (in general and of characters/creatures) I was wondering if I can still draw them as decor? I have a pretty good handle on their anatomy and only wish to use the photos as references, not sure about background though.... 0 players like this post! Like? |

https://www.lioden.com/topic.php?id=24245 No copyrighted/trademarked material allowed in the custom decor rules. James Cameron's AVATAR is trademarked. https://trademarks.justia.com/871/09/james-cameron-s-87109766.html 0 players like this post! Like? Edited on 21/10/23 @ 15:00:36 by Fraekinn (#57572) |

Its best to ask rule-related questions in Modbox, we players can only explain the rules how we interpret them! To make sure you dont get in trouble, ask this question in Modbox so Moderators can give a 100% certain answer. 0 players like this post! Like? |

They would still likely be trademarked, the whole thing is Trademarked to 21st Century Fox, and there can be a LOT of legal troubles for Lioden if they approved it. 21st Century is backed by Disney - who come down like a ton of rocks on anyone who makes "profit" from their work - even virtual currency. 21st Century Fox claims "All Rights Reserved", this means no one technically can use it/profit off it (even virtually) without permission. I remember a friend having to ask NINTENDO for permission to use the name "Lurelin" for their rattery, and they had to jump through LOTS of hoops to appease them. 0 players like this post! Like? This is what I found though (I'm kind of still figuring this out) Disney has only distribution rights James Cameron has everything else but there is no copyright statement? I'm not aiming to brush past this, just kind of confused. If a franchise doesn't have a copyright statement then why not? Wait nvm I didn't see the edit Ty for clarifying 0 players like this post! I'm looking through what you linked- It's talking about the trademarking, not copyrighting though? Nvm I'm still trying to figure out the difference between copyighting/trademarking and what is the link 0 players like this post! Like? Edited on 21/10/23 @ 15:13:41 by Aura (#190696) |

Read the first line of the decors rules. "No copyright or trademarked characters (ex. Spiderman, Pikachu, Digimon, Scooby Doo, etc)." That can include all trademarks, for example if you decided to do an Ikran decor, it could be claimed to be Seze (Neytiri's Ikran), the same with Toruk, etc. 0 players like this post! Like? What about un-named creatures like a Viperwolf or hexapede? It's not a character and can't be claimed by a name like the Ikrans/Toruk can 0 players like this post! Like? |
