A group of 5 lionesses can bring back anything on the prey list, & are more likely to bring back rare prey (?) at higher levels, whereas a group of 1-2 lionesses can only bring back prey as hard as 1-2 lionesses (nothing harder) - so the smaller group should have a higher chance of catching those 1-2 lioness prey because it filters out anything harder.

I'd send out only as many lionesses as the prey requires,
& depending on how much time you have left for the quest perhaps starting with a fresh/unlevelled/inexperienced huntress (who can have the role removed after finishing) if the smaller group is still bringing back hard prey or using an experienced huntress if the target Quest prey is harder to catch. <~ Haven't experimented much with this, but may be a solution if the expected pattern [Hunt [only as many as required] on right tile x however long it takes] is still taking too long.
