Happy/Awkward/Frivolous Thoughts are just for fun and cannot be used to purchase anything. I use them primarily to gauge how involved different players are in the event, and you can also get a rough idea of the kinds of choices they make based off of how many of each thought they have. If you go to the LD wiki and check out the February event's explore encounters, you'll see that a different thought is rewarded for each choice you make in explore.
