It would allow people to go over the rules saying that we are not allowed to advertise on threads of other users as your signature with the ad would be visible there.
You could also put in things that are attacks towards users, harassment and many other things and it will be very hard to moderate. Mods already are swarmed with trades, forum threads, modbox and chat, adding signatures would only make it worse for them.

EDIT:
It will also clutter the threads, especially if html/images were allowed in it, causing more lag which is already bad at times.

I think the idea isn't bad on its own, but it also sounds a little troublesome like what Khajiit said. Maybe if it had a hard character limit, no HTML, no pictures etc.

I would personally be annoyed by the feature because I'm grumpy and hate children having fun, but if it had those limitations I don't think it'd be so awful. I won't support or no support either way for now.

I use a few forums, many of which have signatures, and as long as rules are put in place to stop abuse (for example, no fast, flashing lights, and of course other site rules would apply), I'd love signatures! I'd rather HTML was allowed, including the ability to add images. They can add so much more personality to people's posts.

I wouldn't mind them being used for advertising purposes. That is common in forum signatures, and I feel that they're out of the way enough that it's not so bad. I don't think that it's the same as, say, posting in the incorrect location, as that can quickly become disorganised. Directly advertising on somebody else's post is inconsiderate, but this is not so much, in my opinion, as long as they're not obviously posting just to advertise.

This is an instance where I think a toggle would be nice. Maybe a small button to turn off individual signatures located somewhere on posts. An unfortunate downside to them is that in some cases, they can cause accessibility problems, though as the same is true for den pages and avatars, I don't think that that's reason enough not to implement them.
