ROLEPLAY EXAMPLE
Bearjaw battled against the relentless current, each stroke a struggle against the icy grip of the river. The water, black as the night around them, seemed to swallow him whole as he pushed through its depths, current daring to pull him under before he got a chance to surface himself again and again. He could feel his waterlogged pelt start to weigh him down, and there was a momentary pang of fear that pass through him. His limbs protested with every kick, muscles screaming against the biting cold that seeped into his very bones. It was a dance with danger, a challenge even for a seasoned warrior like himself.
The frigid air above the river cut through him like a thousand knives, assaulting the vulnerable parts of his face – his nose, his ears – with a stinging intensity. The wind found any exposed skin and gnawed at it mercilessly. What wasn't under the assault of the biting wind was drenched by the river, with every kick of the current like a gut punch that dragged him further and further down the river. The water, always colder than the air, seemed to suck the warmth from him, leaving only the pulsating ache of the freezing liquid.
Bearjaw fought against the elements, his senses heightened in the darkness. The deafening rush of the river, the biting cold that threatened to paralyze him – it was a test of wills. And in the midst of this struggle, he clutched the small, fragile form in his powerful jaws, each moment a gamble against the forces that sought to claim both of them. He was as delicate as he could be, but as sensation started to fade from his body, he couldn't tell the force that he exerted with his jaw, and instinct kicked in. He'd never fathered kits - at least, any that he stayed around to see - so he didn't know much about the parental urge that gripped some cats and showed them instinctively how to carry a kit. But he was sure this must be it, or something like it.
He swam with the current now, slowly trying to ride it down and out, towards a shallower part of the river, and every so often he would be pulled under, fighting to keep his muzzle above it, and more importantly, keep the kit above the waterline. It seemed like hours to him, his body screaming with exhaustion despite him being a very fit warrior - it was just a testament to how treacherous this river could be given the opportunity.
Finally, they emerged from the river, Bearjaw's fur clinging to him like a second skin, glistening with droplets that fell like a cascade. Water poured from him, and the air only cut further in, starting to sink its teeth and claws deeper and deeper into his pelt as the cold chilled him further and further. The cold air turned his breath into misty clouds as he staggered onto the shore. A small price, Bearjaw thought, for the precious life he had pulled from the jaws of the river.
Gently, as if handling the most delicate of treasures, Bearjaw laid Swankit down on the unforgiving riverbank. His amber eyes, dull with exhaustion but still holding a gaze of determination, scrutinized her small form. She shivered uncontrollably, her once pristine white fur now a soggy and clinging to that kitten pudge that well-fed kittens usually had. The kit wasn't neglected - up until this moment. And that sickened him... But the urgency pressed upon him – time was of the essence.
The night deepened, the wilderness around them closing in like an impenetrable cloak. Bearjaw shook his thick fur, water droplets daring to turn to snowflakes in midair before disappearing into the abyss of the night. "Hang on, little one," he rumbled, his voice a deep, comforting growl that resonated through the dark. "We're not out of the woods yet."
"Down here!" he yowled, before bending over and coughing up a lungful of river water, which felt like razorblades tearing its way up his throat and out his mouth and nose, "It's- it's a k-kit! Help!"
A cry of desperation from Bearjaw was rare. This was of the utmost urgency.
