HI!! so ive been drawing since 2021 I think, I mainly started drawing after reading the warriors series. I wanted to make my own OC's and make them come to life! ive come a long way for sure but I just need some tips..

I really need help shading and just with colors in general. My art is always so flat and boringgg and along with that, markings!! markings are too hards for me especially tabby and tortie marks.
And I also need them with poses and anatomy, my art also just usually looks pretty stiff and I tend to always just draw the same poses. When I try and mess around with other poses I get discouraged because it doesn't look right.

and keep in mind!! im broke lol so I draw on an iPhone with my finger using ibis paint X, I wish I could use Procreate but I just cant and I also took a long break from drawing.. probably about 8 months are im trying to get the hang of it again!!

please give me helpful criticism because I really want to improve!!

Here's how ive been growing one is a drawing of my OC from 2022 and the other just from today!

Hey!! I also draw on ibis paint with my finger! (Got a cheap pencil of Amazon, don’t use it often tho-) and ima drop my own tips!!

First, if you need help with poses, TRACING IS OK!!!!!! Google “dynamic cat poses” AND TRACE THAT SHIT, people also post slideshows of cat poses on tiktok sometimes too!! Add the photo in, lower the opacity to 50/60%, and TRACE.

Second, google real cat markings and whatnot, OR go on a cat rp game (like Warrior Cats: Ultimate Edition on Roblox and create a character to base your drawing off of!!) you don’t HAVE to conjure everything from your mind!

Third, try simple backgrounds!! I recently tried making it look like my cat was standing on a rocky cliff or sum, and all I had to do was draw gray cliffs, a shadow for the cat, and the sky w/ some clouds!

Fourth, INSPIRATION!!! Pinterest, Tiktok, YouTube, fucking google, look at other people’s art!! Of course don’t trace and copy their artwork piece by piece, but say if you like the way they do eyes, then take inspo from them!!

Anyway, hope this stuff helps you and/or other artists!! (Ofc I am no pro, so try it and see if it works!!)

Thank you lost!! ive always been reluctant to trace because I just felt like I was cheating I wouldn't be a good artist if I needed to trace but every time I see a art tips video for beginners, tracing is recommended so ill go on pintrest and look up cats posing or something lol Again thank you so much for the tips!!

I agree with The State of The Moon, tracing is completely fine AS LONG as you don't claim artwork as your own.
Especially as a newish artist, theres so much more you can learn about anatomy and proportions if you learn from other artwork and photographs directly. Once you have the basics down you can think about using what youve learned to develop your own art style and no longer need to depend on tracing,
Always use references! Anywhere, everyhwere.

Thank you!! ive been using real cats doing some weird poses as reference so far so i can actually get comfortable with not just drawing standing or sitting cats lol
