Water ... When was the last time she had had something to drink? Far longer than she had had something to eat, that was for sure. Her mouth was parched, her skin cracked, her fur patchy and falling out. Her bones jutted out from under her hide at nauseating ankles, so little flesh clinging to her that even the vultures would find her difficult to stomach. What was there for them to take? A few shrunken organs, a collection of frail bones, that was perhaps it. She had fled her maternal pride many, many moons ago. A combination of disease and starvation, before a violent takeover that further thinned the ranks by slaughtering or chasing off adolescents from the latest litter, broke the Pride apart. She ran rather than force herself to entertain the incoming new Kings, terrified and not the sort to try and survive on her own. Lone lionesses didn't survive long, she was warned, you need a Pride to survive. She was dying. She knew it. She had tried to scavenge from any kills or dead animals she could, even becoming violently sick after eating a vulture in desperation. Even dry twigs, but all that gave her was painful splinters and an even angrier stomach. The dry season now meant that water was also scarce, and she was dying even faster. I can't ... Her legs quivered, before buckling entirely and causing her to collapse out in the open on the dry, sandy grass. Character SheetsView and Post Character Sheets0 players like this post! Like? |

"Well, I mean, I'm very successful, too... but I don't think I've seen a lioness with a mane. I'd love to, though, even if just to observe." Atlas mused, stretching out his front legs and digging his long claws into the bark. He smiled, but the expression faded when he noticed her fur standing up. "Is something wrong? Is it bad that there's no other predators here?" He seemed fairly puzzled by her reaction to this realization. He hadn't seen anything wrong with being the sole predator in the territory... well, besides Chuki, now. But she was still quite weak, and didn't seem to pose much of a competition to him. And he liked having her around, so did that still make her competition? 0 players like this post! Like? |

"It just feels .. off? To me? But I'm probably just over-scared from my trip here" She tried to smile, but the corners of her eyes betrayed her worry. Something primal, something ancient deep in her mind was saying something was wrong, but she couldn't articulate why, other than the fact it was odd this place had no other predators besides Atlas. And now, her, really. "It's fine, it's okay, look, do you need help patrolling? I can't just do nothing since you helped me" 0 players like this post! Like? |

Atlas paused, considering her question. Then he nodded. “If you’re feeling up to it, sure! I wouldn’t mind the company. But, mind you, my patrolling usually goes over a day or two, if not more.” He smiled, tail twitching. “Reckon you’re up for that?” He still felt concerned about her… what was bothering her? “I hope that the patrol will help ease your worries… or at least help you find what’s causing them.” 0 players like this post! "I can do that!" One would have thought she had had enough walking to last any lion a thousand lifetimes, but seemingly not. "I can look for herbs for my paws while I'm at it" 0 players like this post! Like? |

He smiled, then leapt off of the tree. He practically flew over Chuki, and then landed on her other side, bounding forward once or twice as he let his momentum carry him. "What sort of herbs are you looking for in particular? So I can keep an eye out for them too." He asked, tilting his head at her. "Four eyes are better than two when searching for something." 0 players like this post! Like? |

"It's very small, little white flowers with spikes on the stems that look sharp but they're soft. At least, to us they are" The size difference was still very amusing up close. Normally a lioness would tower over the average leopard, Chuki was just under his 'height' shoulder to shoulder, her form sleeker due to malnourishment. If she were fully healthy, it would be a close to fair fight, Atlas would probably beat most male lions with his stature as well. "Do leopards have herbs? I'm told it's rare for lions, only really old prides who listen to ancient stories use them" 0 players like this post! Like? |

"Mmm... well, I personally don't use many. I think I remember seeing some like you described, but they're about a day's walk from here, that way." He nodded his head in the direction of the rising sun. "Sometimes I'll eat some grass if my stomach isn't feeling quite right, but beyond that I'm not sure. If I remember right, my mother used a root that was yellow and brown to help ease sickness." Atlas replied. "Beyond that, I'm not entirely sure." He started towards the river, intending to get a drink before setting off. The land was still gripped tightly in the clutches of the drought, and he had no intention of starting off on a patrol thirsty. 0 players like this post! Like? |

She followed in his wake, her shoulderblades poking through her back in a way that almost looked painful. Her stomach was obviously full, her skin under her patchy fur appeared to have some life through it with blood flowing thanks to the water she had taken in earlier. "Grass is always good" She nodded, "Baboons are really clever with plants, elephants too. I've seen them eat clay and rocks if they have eaten something they shouldn't have ... but since we're meat-eaters, we don't need that. Worst we'll do is eat something that was poisoned or too rotten. I have eaten a vulture ... and it was too much" 0 players like this post! Like? |

Atlas quietly looked her over, assessing her condition. While her fur still wasn't in the greatest state, that would change over time. Same with how thin she was. The food in her stomach would take a bit to begin affecting her, but it was good that she hadn't thrown it up yet. "Did it taste alright?" Atlas asked. He was curious now.. how DID a vulture taste? Was it rancid like the meat that made up its diet? "I can't imagine it did, if I'm being honest..." He scanned the river before him, and once he had determined there were no alligators within the water, he crouched to drink his fill. 0 players like this post! Like? |

She curled her lip so far up it caught on her teeth, again showing her stunted canines that had the very tips broken off. "It had been dead for a while ... Maybe it ate something bad, I don't know, but it was so, so, so horrible ... I didn't think anything could taste worse. I think the only thing that might would be rotten poop or something" She would rather not talk about such things when she was happily digesting some food, fresh food. The yolk and white had dried on her face, hardening rock-hard and the drink of the water from the river helped her cleaned up. She looked up and down the river, licking the water droplets from her brittle whiskers as she looked at who else was at the river. "I don't see a lot of hippos ..." That didn't bother her much, maybe the river just wasn't big enough for them, "Or crocodiles ... Unless maybe you had hippos and they chased the crocs away?" 0 players like this post! Like? |

"There's a small herd of hippos that frequent the river when it's deep enough. During the dry seasons they hang around, but they leave to go to the river's source during the drought. I've seen a crocodile three times in all my time here, and each time the hippos frightened it off. They don't seem to mind my presence when they see I've no intention of or interest in taking their calves. Tried that once, and I sorely regretted it." Atlas shrugged. "They're too much for just myself, and a pain to drag into the tree as is. Besides, if they're keeping the crocs away, they can absolutely hang around." He looked over at her curiously. "Do you think that's a reasonable principle?" 0 players like this post! Like? |

"You tried to take a hippo calf?" Her face was utterly astonished. Not even the bravest lions would attempt such a thing; the mothers were too protective, the herds too vicious. She had seen lions attempt an adult hippo, only to be shaken off like flies as the great beast rushed for the river again. The only ones brave - or foolish - enough were hyenas, and their numbers and crushing mouths made it a genuine challenge. "I don't think that's unreasonable. That sounds ... Kingly" 0 players like this post! Like? |
