She was a gift to The Sentinel from King Spock.
:Late Winter (Three Years, One Month):
Her first litter of cubs was missing and the anxious mother had no idea where they were. Though she went to seek out the king to ask, The Sentinel's Sun was no where to be found. Hours later, he returned and went to the lioness with some sober news. "I took your cubs away but..."
When he approached, U.S.S. Kobayashi Maru sniffed him furiously, trying to learn where he had been. He was silent as she smelled him. To her disappointment, she realized The Sentinel had been at the Nature Reserve, and it was then that she knew the fate of her missing cubs (as well as several others throughout the territory who accompanied the cubs to the reserve). She was sad they were gone but knew both would be well taken care of in the lands guarded by humans.
"They would not have survived in the wild." The Sentinel said as he nuzzled her. "We will make new ones, stronger ones together."
Though still sad, Kobayashi Maru agreed with her king.
:Four Years:
As you approach, U.S.S. Kobayashi Maru starts sniffing you furiously, trying to learn where have you been.
:Four Years, Five Months:
As you approach, U.S.S. Kobayashi Maru starts sniffing you furiously, trying to learn where have you been.
:Four Years, Six Months:
Happy to see you, U.S.S. Kobayashi Maru bumps her forehead against yours and tries to sniff you secretly to find out what other lions you have met today.

U.S.S. Kobayashi Maru runs to you, asking how your day was and what happened and who you fought with and what animals have you seen today and how are you feeling and how many beetles do you have and and and - she gasps for air, and continues with questions.

It is a Starfleet training exercise designed to test the character of cadets in the command track at Starfleet Academy.
The notional primary goal of the exercise is to rescue the civilian vessel Kobayashi Maru in a simulated battle with the Klingons. The disabled ship is located in the Klingon Neutral Zone, and any Starfleet ship entering the zone would cause an interstellar incident. The approaching cadet crew must decide whether to attempt rescue of the Kobayashi Maru crew - endangering their own ship and lives or leave the Kobayashi Maru to certain destruction. If the cadet chooses to attempt rescue, the simulation is designed to guarantee that the ship is destroyed with the loss of all crew members.
But Kirk being well Kirk he hacks the program and makes it so he can win since he believes in no win scenarios. He also get up on probation for the act though he was quite smart to do what he did.
