Deok-man Ongju
"Princess Deokman"

She is named after an actual historical figure, Princess Deokman, daughter of King Jinpyeong of Silla. She became Queen Seon-deok, the first Queen Regnant of Silla, after her father's death. At that time, the Korean peninsula was divided into three major kingdoms, Silla, Baekje, and Goguryeo, as well as some minor small kingdoms.

Queen Seon-deok of Silla
(reigned 632 - 647 CE)

Princess Deok-man was either the first or the second daughter of King Jinpyeong of Silla and his Queen Consort, Lady Maya. She is said to have been a precocious child, and since her father had no son, he named her his heir. At that time, women had a higher status in society and held positions of influence, so the idea of a female ruler was accepted and Princess Deok-man became Queen Seon-deok after her father's death.

Queen Seon-deok is credited with having steered Silla through rivalries and wars between the three kingdoms during her reign; the commander-in-chief of her army, General Kim Yushin, would later conquer the other two kingdoms and unify the Korean peninsula after her death. The queen also supported the sciences and the arts and caused the building of the Cheomseongdae (Star Gazing Tower), considered to be the first observatory in the Far East. She also caused the building of a nine-story wooden Buddhist pagoda at the Hwangryong Temple, reported to have been 80m tall, said to be the tallest wooden structure on earth at the time of its completion.
