6/18/2018 - Masked Fate loved to keep track of the cubs he sired. Many did not stay in his pride, and he did not hear from them ever again; but he loved them all the same and took pride in each and every one of his children.
He was doing just that when he noticed he'd sired some very odd cubs; two achromias in a single litter. He gushed fondly over them, his precious little angels. He knew some lions found mutations to be a curse, but he saw them as gifts, if anything at all. He loved his Pridemates, mutated or not, and was sure his cub's pride felt the same way.
Perhaps he was wrong.
A few days passed, and he lazily browsed his list again. This time, he noticed that one had changed prides; one of the achromias, in fact. It was startling, and he was even more startled to see the other was for sale as well! It pained him greatly that his cubs were being sent away, and he took matters into his own paws.
The fee was one golden beetle, and he payed it happily. "You're home now, little one. I'm sorry you weren't sooner." He held the cub close to him, so protective of his beautiful daughter. "I'll call you Yuki." It was a word for Snow, the delicate frozen fluff that her coat reminded him of.
~
Yuki settled into the Sun Pride well. The other lions welcomed her with open arms, and she was well cared for by her half sister, Blossom. Queen Snow was quick to accept her as a daughter, and often fawned over the little one. She trained alongside the other cubs and adolescents well, and her appearance was never spoken of. She loved it here.
6/19/2018 - You went up to Yuki to ask how hunting practice went today. She instead told you all about a cool bird she saw on the way. You guess she doesn't really want to talk about it. Ah well.
6/21/2018 - Fully trained at 1 year, 4 months old!
6/23/2018 - How beautiful! The Decor Item is now attached to lion and gone from the hoard. (African Pink Violet)
6/23/2018 - Yuki loved the waterfall.
It was no easy place to reach, of course. Travelling through narrow twists and turns, various ins and outs to find this hidden paradise. But that's what made it worth it. It was secluded, quiet, and truly all her own. She carefully evaded any and all attempts by pridemates to find its location. She spent a lot of time carefully covering her scent and checking for the smell of others, but she never found anyone else.
Masked Fate was initially troubled to hear that she was sneaking off to unknown places. But after talking to her many times, she finally agreed to take him there once, and only once, just to prove she was safe and still well within the Pride's borders. As soon as she offered that, he relaxed and politely declined.
"As long as you are safe, my dear. That's all I ever wanted for you."
She'd been thinking of his words a lot lately. She knew he worried about her when she ran off life this. She seemed to be good at running, in all honesty - evading baths, training, and now, her pride.
She loved them, of course. She had no intention of ever leaving, either. But she needed this time alone, to quietly sort out her thoughts. She thought a lot. About what she'd do that day, what she would eat later, why her father had gone through all that trouble to find a child that wasn't really his responsibility.
'You're home now, little one. I'm sorry you weren't sooner.' When she was younger, clueless, she hadn't even considered to ask him what that meant. Now, she longed desperately for answers.
Her thoughts were interrupted by quiet footsteps. She spun around to face the man of the hour.
"I'm sorry to interrupt you here," Masked Fate started, sitting down near the entrance of the area. "I just needed to see if this is where you were. I'll leave now."
Before he could walk away, a pure white paw touched his. "How did you know?" Yuki asked.
He chuckled. "I've been here before."
She sat for a moment, considering his words. Silence fell between them.
"Why'd you look for me?" She finally asked.
He looked at her. She seemed to be deep in thought. Her expression almost seemed pained. "I was just worried. I need to know that my family is safe, after all."
"No," she replied, shaking her head. "Not today. When you adopted me."
He was taken aback by this. He hadn't expected such a question. Was that why she looked so pained?
"My family deserves love and affection. They deserve safety and security. They deserve a forever pride. You had none of those things...it was my responsibility to fix that."
She only looked at him with confusion.
"Blood helped me find you," he continued. "But family is so, so much more than that. Family is the choices we make, the love we give. It's more than just a title; it's a feeling."
The sappier Masked Fate got, the more confusing he became. 'Is that something all kings do?' Yuki wondered.
Regardless, she felt what he meant, even if she didn't necessarily understand it.
She was suddenly aware of how wet her face had become. 'When did I start crying?'
Masked Fate pulled her into a hug. She took a moment to sob, to release everything she hadn't realized she'd trapped inside. When she finally stopped, he pulled away and placed a single flower behind her ear.
Neither said a word as they walked back to the Pridelands, parting ways with smiles on their muzzles.
6/27/2018 - She'd been spending a lot more time with Snow lately.
How could she not? Snow was, for all intents and purposes, her mother. And it killed Yuki to see her mother growing older and weaker by the day.
She could see that her dad was worried. His amber eyes seemed emptier lately. She'd done her best to stay close in light of this. She didn't want to give him something else to worry about.
It was strange, really. She wasn't even especially close to Snow. She'd only really seen her in her cubhood. But something about the lioness made her so easy to love, allowed you to grow so attached so quickly.
Her little albino wolf pup never left her side. He was a playful little guy, and spent all his time trying to cheer Yuki up. She'd grown very serious in her adolescence, and that little pup was not having it. She chuckled as he nommed her paw.
"OK, buddy," she laughed, leaving her thoughts behind. "We'll go play. You win."
He always did.
6/30/2018 - Yuki (#794118210609) - They got the following stat boosts from cub training: +3 STR +14 AGI +1 SPD
+28 SMR +16 STM
7/10/2018 - "We've changed, haven't we?"
She stared into the albinoid eyes of her companion. A wolf with fur as white as hers, blessed or cursed just as she was. He was a rare sight, a wolf afflicted with achromia. And they were a rare pair.
He went by Tsuki, a word for the moon in the same language as her and her half-sister's names. She'd met the wolf as a cub, a gift from Masked Fate and Snow so she'd never be alone, long before Shiro was born with the same strange pelt. He was the runt of his litter, left by his mother. Yuki supposed they weren't all that different in that sense.
They'd grown quite a lot over the months. She was quiet, mature, maybe a little small for her age. She'd grown quickly, though. Tsuki grew slowly however. By Yuki's adolescence, he'd barely made it past his puppy size, despite all the food and care he was given. She'd worried about him at times, but she felt silly to have ever had doubts looking at him now.
He'd grown considerably. He was nearly her size, a strong and formidable wolf. She smiled at him.
"We did it, Tsuki. Look at us now!"
He watched as she pranced around, his tail swaying slightly on the ground. It was a strange turn of events, her being the playful one and him being the thoughtful one. Neither minded, though. The role switch was refreshing.
She snuggled up against him, and he licked her cheek, settling down beside her. They were happiest this way, resting comfortably with each other.
"Forever and always, Tsuki," Yuki whispered with a smile.
He nodded.Β
7/14/2018 - 3 years!
8/13/2024 - You were playing a game of hide and seek with Yuki. She was hiding in the tall grass. Yeah. "Hiding".
9/15/2024 - Other lions in your pride used to tease Yuki about their weird appearance, until they started a rumor that they were favored by the spirits. Nobody wanted to mess with that.
9/21/24 - You noticed some pinkness on the top of Yuki's ears and nose. Sunburnt again? (Aww baby...)
