Her mother was a traveler and didn't plan on keeping her cub, so when Kuzima was weaned, she left her and went her way. Astraea and her then Queen took the cub in and raised her as their own. At least, until they couldn't anymore. Kuzima is not exactly someone who would be considered nice. That doesn't mean she is unkind or cruel, she simply has a very sharp tongue that she has very little control over.
