Luna was found next to her dead mother. Judging by the wounds, the lioness was killed by poachers. The cub was too small to know what's happening, and despite hours passing she was still trying to wake up her mother.
Lotus, Pebble and Bat'Wing took the cub to their pride where Anza accepted it as his own.
Pebble was the one who named Luna. She often visited her in the nursery, and the cub liked her to the point where she considered the huntress to be her mother.

Luna grew to be a really curious cub. She liked to explore The Den and the rest of The Lake Land, but she couldn't do it with all the caretakers watching her every step. She had to learn how to be sneaky... She learned how to watch other lions and catch their moments of distractions. This way, she could explore the whole land without anyone noticing that she's gone. There was only one lion who knew... Sunset, the pride's Stealth Master.
She watched Luna really closely and always followed her to keep the cub save. However, Luna never noticed Sunset's presence.
When the cub grew up and had to start her training Sunset asked to be her mentor.
After over a year Sunset learned that she could trust Luna and noticed even more of her talents. When Sunset was sure of it all, she told Luna about her real role in the pride. She was the king's spy, and she wanted Luna to be her succesor.
Luna was surprised by Sunset's revelation. At first, she wanted to turn down Sunset's offer because she didn't like the current king, but later she agreed to be Sunset's apprentice for that very reason.
Hawk liked to punish lions for minor mistakes that they made. If Luna could became the one to inform him about everything that happens in the pride, she would be able to protect some lions from unnecesary punishments.
Luna herself was almost banished from the Pride after she refused to abandon her weakest cub... She didn't want anyone else to suffer this kind of fate.

When Oleander took over the pride, Luna received a new mission. The new king asked her to watch Hawk's old allies and Hawk himself, just to make sure they aren't planning anything behind Oleander's back.
