Personality: If you asked his handler, she’d tell you what she tells all judges. Thunder is a great working dog. He’s dedicated, shows amazing focus on and off the field, and has a great protection instinct. That, however, is just his performance persona. Despite his rather loving upbringing, the German Shepherd is a rather closed off dog. He has a hard time trusting strangers – both canine and human – and will cold shoulder a newcomer more often than not. Of course, he’s not actually mean. He can be very protective and caring of those he trusts. It’s just a matter of earning that side of him. The only time an outsider can see the excited part of Thunder is during his training sessions with his owner/handler.

History: Thunder was bred from a union between a two show dogs, but was rejected for the show life as a puppy because he lacked some of the defining characteristics of the breed. Not that this mattered at all. He was still sold to a loving young woman and was given a good home at 8 weeks old. Around the time he was 6 months old his owner began training him for Schutzhund competitions. It was a hobby at first, but he soon came to love it. The commands kept his mind working and trials allowed him to run and exercise with purpose. The young dog met others of his breed, he and his handler learned tips, and worked hard together to raise their rank in the competitions. This brought the pair incredibly close together, beyond the typical bond of dog and master. They became family – at least to Thunder – and eventually made it to the top level of the Schutzhund competitions. This pair has come to Smallville to relax and train-up in a dog friendly place, hoping to get an edge on their competition.
