So I had thissy here idea; what if you gained Karma by gifting other players? A lion with the generosity of giving gifts to his comrades is certainly a kind one.
This would apply to giving items to other players through the link on their den page. When one user gifts another user, they'd receive positive karma for their kindness.

Obviously, though, it could probably be easily taken advantage of by just gifting really cheap things to a lot of people or back and forth between accounts; to prevent that, limits can easily be applied as to how much karma can be gained in a day or other time limit. To decide how much positive karma is gained, I was thinking it could run based on value (based on price at the Monkey Shop): for example, for every 500 SB-worth gifted by a player, they receive +1 Karma. There could also be limits as to how much karma you could receive from gifting a single person to prevent people taking advantage of alternate accounts. I think it'd be a really great idea to implement generosity as a beneficial thing, and give lions a positive reputation for what they do outside of Explore.

Edit: Other Ideas: (see comments, not all ideas mine)
- +Karma of gifts depending on Rarity of items, not Value
- Wishlists
- Ability to Enable/Disable Karma from gifting

What about negative karma?

I dunno, I think that's already taken care of in Explore

Sounds like a good idea. It maybe tricky to make sure people don't take advantage of it, ect, but it's definitely a nice way to make up for the fact that there's very little good karma to be found in explore.

It's a decent idea, but there's no way to determine how much a gift is "worth" since the cost of items across the site fluctuates with demand. Maybe it could be measured through the type of item, for instance a Food item = 1 karma, Toy = 2 karma, Decor = 3 karma and so on.

I have to agree with Robin's statement, though it isn't a bad idea. The value of each item would be disputable, especially since some users may have no use for decor but love receiving food.
Additionally, some may love to be generous but want bad karma for their kings, and therefore wouldn't gift! I do think gifting is considered the same as transferring by the site. It would be a nice touch to have, say, a "Most Generous" ranking on the leaderboard to promote generosity? Anonymous gifting, so that users wouldn't be told who gave them what, would be cool as well! Perhaps something could be coded to give a bonus to users who gift others items on their "wishlist" displayed next to the Gift User link? Users could ask for certain items, amounts of SB/GB, or use amounts. So, if I had the following on my wishlist:

1. 10+ GB
2. Vulture Feather
3. Bearded Eagle [ at least 3 uses left ]
4. Sudd Marshes [ 5/5 uses ]
5. 350+ SB
6. Nyala Carcass [ MUST have at least 5 days til expiry. ]

and someone were to gift me 1 GB, a Vulture Feather, and 4 use Bearded Eagle, they'd get more "generosity" points then they would if they gifted me a Nyala Carcass with 2 days to expiry, but if they gifted me a Frivolous Apedemak they'd get less than they would for gifting me an item on my wishlist but more than a common item like a meerkat skull.
Perhaps users would gift more instead of selling things like rotting food to Monkey Business, therefore leading to less SB around the site which would improve prices.

One could set minimums, at leasts, at mosts, uses, days til expiry, etc. for display on their wishlist and users could, if they had that item in their hoard that fit the criteria, click Gift! directly from the wishlist to send over the item after a confirmation that showed it was on the wishlist and eligible for extra reward.

@Robin I was thinking that the Values of an item would be determined by it's price in the Monkey Shop.
Or, perhaps, a ranking system which determines the rarity of an item by determining how many people currently have? For example, many exotic decor items are much rarer than the plentiful items found in Explore. Gifting rarer items could up a person's Karma more than cheap, common items. However, I don't think that idea of "Food = 1 Karma, Decor = 3" etc would work, considering how not all food, decor, and etc items are equal; some food items are a lot better than others.

@|| S H E N A N I G A N S || Those are all really great points and ideas. If a generous user wants bad karma, perhaps there can be an option to toggle whether or not actions affect their Karma outside of Explore--like at the bottom of your profile, where you can Enable/Disable things like Friend Requests and etc, there could be an option to Enable/Disable Karma-related actions outside of Explore. I also really love the idea of a Wishlist; it would make users more open to being gifted and/or offered trades for items they want.

Ah, thanks! I'm glad I ran into this thread. However, I think the rarity factor might be a bit tricky as well, because, for example, I don't think very many users buy the food bundle [is that the name?] from Monkey Business, and those items rot as well as pertain of only a few snacks such as rats and otter carcasses. They would either rot or be consumed before, or sold to MB/sold or maybe traded to other users who'd use them, resulting in a relatively low in-game item count, so then critter bundles would have a ridiculously high rarity value, while something worth more but more common like a Fiery Unders valued at at least 5 GB on average would award less points, which seems unfair and might hurt uninformed gifters.

I don't know how it would be best to work, but awarding good karma for gifting may not be the best idea?
Your toggle suggestion, perhaps from the den page could turn off positive karma for gifting but still count generosity points, so a Deathlord of the Jungle lion could be listed as Most Generous on the leaderboards if a user wanted that. As much as I like gaining positive karma from gifts, as I do like the "good" side, Generosity Points could be used as separate awards themselves for an extra boost or for those not interested in karma? Maybe users could even buy special items with GP from an exclusive GP shop! That might cause mass gifting/gift spam to other users, but perhaps they could disable gifts not on their wishlist, or disable them altogether? A limit might do well in that case, but other random rewards instead of or along with a GP shop would be cool as well.

It would be cool to be able to gift or maybe transfer functions like the feed all, play all to other users, though, since those are applied to an account upon purchase.
