I've been meaning to make this suggestion for a while now but keep forgetting. It would be cool to have a corded mane, like the way the hair on puli and komondor dogs grows.

Like this:

Only just on the neck of the lion, obviously. I'd make a mock-up but my drawing skills aren't up to par for it and I think the idea is straightforward enough to not need one.

EDIT:

Oh man, I forgot about this suggestion. I had been meaning to update it a bit. I got some (slightly) better pictures. I mean, they're still dogs, but at least the hair is closer to the right area.

Also, to address comments about realism. I don't know, a corded mane doesn't seem any less realistic than a lot of stuff on Lioden. It seems within the realm of possibility to me, considering things like piebald or black lions don't actually exist. (And that's not getting into the, "Well cinnabar and purple eyes," argument.)

eh... While it would look cool, a corded coat is a lot of maintenance. Corded pulis, komondors, and poodles depend on their humans to separate their cords so they don't just form mats, and to keep them dry and clean so they don't develop skin conditions or the hair starts to mold from moisture. A corded lion would not look like the corded puli, but like one of those super neglected cats where they have to shave all the hair off in one big blanket. Additionally, the cords hanging over the eyes would be a serious detriment :o

I was picturing it more just on the area most of the other manes cover, so no hair flopped over the eyes.

I don't particularly like it for myself, but I can see the appeal for others. Support.

Support. I absolutely love this. I had a Puli as a child and I absolutely loved just feeling his hair. This would be just gorgeous on a lion. I recently took in a Komondor (had to end up shaving because his coat wasn't corded, but a sold mat) and I am hoping in the next year we can cord him nicely. This would just look so beautiful on a lion! I did come across a lion with dreads.

The main isn't full dreadlocks/corded, it is very nice. The lion is obviously captive and I'm sure his caretakers have helped with the cording (or maybe not). It is very beautiful either way.

No support! I feel like this could potentially be a lethal mutation rather than a mane idea, because as grΓ₯bein said above, corded hair requires a LOT of maintenance and intervention from humans and in the wild the hair would matt, likely lead to skin conditions, would impare vision IF it covers the eyes, and probably lead to an early, uncomfortable death.

All of the other mane suggestions make sense realistically, but this might be better off as a dΓ©cor that blends in with the mane, kinda like the mane braids.

No support.

Pulis only have mains like that because of extreme genetic inbreeding. It's a huge upkeep for owners to keep them from matting, getting skin conditions, causing eye problems, ect. While lots of stuff on lioden isn't natural, or even plausible, I feel like we should draw a line somewhere between what looks cool and what is too far.

Also, dreads are a cultural hair style in many cultures (and cords is just another name for that) so it has to be considered that adding this to the came could potentially cross a line to being insensitive if not handled correctly.

Support! If it was a mostly normal mane with some cords near the fringes (maybe near the belly/framing the face?) it wouldn't seem too unrealistic.

Well, we have "Mane Braids" as a decor. I see no reason if lions can end up with braids in their manes, why they can't possibly have dreadlocks too?

Maybe the monkeys help them with their grooming needs along with body paints and such?

"Maybe the monkeys help them with their grooming needs along with body paints and such?"

I agree, putting a line in the sand between body paints and cords would be silly. This gets my full, unabashed support! My entire den is based around Tsavo but I'd swiftly change to Corded, it'd be a very unique, beautiful mane to have. I think a corded mane would blend nicely into the african aesthetic of the site, as when in rome do as romans do!

I'll see if i cant do an art mockup for this.

Lion manes aren't the kind of thing to naturally dread, but as other people have said, if they can braid their manes, they can dread them. It would probably work better as a decor, though, just like braids! Especially considering it doesn't naturally grow like that. I'm not sure about it being a genetically inherited mane type, but I support!

Support! Even if the "cords" were thicker, or if the cords were dispersed throughout normal looking fur, I really like it.

The complaints about realism seem particularly nitpicky, considering we can have pink lions with purple eyes.

I feel like this could look like a very messy mane if not drawn correctly. The lion picture Eastern posted earlier looks raggety and unkempt, and it's not a look I really prefer.
