Lilac is a particularly hard base to breed, especially with the new genetics system - most medium bases are incredibly difficult to breed now. This is a pain, but it can be done.

Honestly, there seems to be a LOT on this game that I don't grasp because there isn't a clear explanation. A lot of times i'm left to search the boards for an answer, and, even then there's no definite answer to my questions. Blah. I hope they get the FAQ running sometime soon. Maybe that'll help?

Medium x medium gives a 50% chance for medium shades, a 25% chance for light shades, and a 25% chance for dark shades.
The lilac base is also incredibly hard to breed, I've gotten one lilac from a lilac x lilac in the few months that I've been breeding them, the rest have been albino or white :o

this is also a guide to which bases are in which categories, that is updated by staff when new bases are added etc, so you can see where lilac is relative to other bases. Like Luulagoo already mentioned medium bases are by far the hardest to breed because even medium x medium only gives statistically half medium cubs, rather than dark or light.

Lilac is also in the rarest possible base category, the 'parent only specials' - meaning you need at least one parent with the base, and that they are much much rarer than the other 'normal' specials. People have tried to compile stats for how often lilac and other rare medium specials are passed on to cubs, and it seems to be possibly a less than 1% pass rate, so it could take some serious patience :(
