The sun slowly began to sink behind the African horizon, sending long, golden fingers of light out to caress the female hyena as she stood, watching its descent. A gentle breeze whipped at her stiff mane as it raged across the savannah, whipping the long grasses into a frenzy. Inhaling deeply, she closed her eyes and listened, simply enjoying the peace that nightfall brought to this place. Daylight was noisy and frenzied, and at times, overwhelming.

Soon the thick scent of blood broke her out of her relaxed state, and her amber eyes snapped open. Tilting her ears forward, she inhaled deeply again, this time to figure out what that scent was, and where it was coming from. Her stomach rumbled loudly as it hit her again, this time mixed with the stench of lions. An odd look crossed the female's face, a cross between excitement and anger and she leaned forward slightly on her toes, opening her mouth. A glint of excitement entered her eyes and she leaped down from her perch at the entrance to her den.

She was hungry, and there was food nearby. So what if lions had killed it? Her clan would be the ones eating it, if she had anything to do with it. Lowering her muzzle, she began to emit the slow, cackling call she'd perfected to tell her clan it was time to feed. Any that did not respond would not eat. It was a simple as that. After emitting the sound a few more times, she lifted her head to find out where the lions had settled in to eat their prey. She knew they'd heard her calls as well by the sounds of agitated roars and heavy thudding paws on the savannah, but she did not fear the big cats. With her clan behind her, Labyrinth was certain they could take on one of Africa's top predators and win.

That day, Kolben had noticed a very faint scent coming off of one of the females. The scent he had come to recognize as being a precursor to that lovely scent of heat. And even though Kolben was devoted to the queen first and foremost, the chance to breed was the chance to breed. So when the female had set out early, the male had followed her. He kept his distance in the hopes to avoid her turning on him in annoyance but had also done his best to chase the other males away. After all, if they weren't around when she was ready to breed, all the better the chance for him. Plus it, in his mind, showed he had good, strong genes to pass off to her cubs. Sure, sure the females were the ones who choose who they bred to but he figured he might as well turn the odds in his favor as best he could.

Kolben stopped in his tracks as a whooping call spread out across the savannah and, after a moment, recognized it as Labyrinth's. He turned back around and let out a low, long whoop to signal he was coming. He looked briefly over his shoulder at the female he had been following then raced back towards the den where the sound had been coming from. By the time the male got there, Bun was already approaching Labyrinth and surely most of the females were there or close. He decided it best not to approach her yet and gave all the females several yards of space unless it seemed like they were approaching him with the intent of greeting him. Should that happen, Kolben would flip his front paws over so he was essentially walking on his wrists, lower his head and make sure his entire body was lower then them. For now, his head was lifted as he was smelling the air and he started drooling and getting excited as he realized they were going to go steal a lion kill.
