It had been a disappointing morning for Tanga, he had three litters born through the night. All girls. All eight of the newborns were girls. While he was happy that they were healthy and they were darn cute, Tanga would be lying if he said he was discouraged that none of them were males. After congratulating the mothers he made the excuse of going on patrol to get away from his pride so he could sulk in peace. Though, while he shuffled around the outskirts of the northern territory he was not alone. His messenger, A'mira, scurried along close behind him. " ‘Mira. Beside, not behind." He smiled as he gave the gentle reminder to the young polecat. She squeaked and bounded up to his flank, wheezing out an apology. A’mira was the youngest daughter of Tanga’s previous aid, A’idah. Her skills and abilities were nowhere near her mother’s but A’mira was lovable and a fast learner so Tanga took on the work in progress. "Sir, we should probably cut this patrol short. You’ve got to reassign hunting parties and there’s that meeting at high noon." A’mira’s voice held a bit of uncertainty as she made the suggestion. Tanga nodded a bit solemnly and turned to head back to the pride dens. As he lumbered back his mind drifted to the reason for the midday meeting and his whiskers twitched. He was supposed to be meeting Aristophanes to discuss a possible alliance. He had told none of the girls about it since he already knew they’d only convince him not to go. He was in quite the predicament, he wasn’t as young as he used to be and he was struggling to produce an heir before the rapidly closing window shut him out for good. He wasn’t entierly sure how to rectify this problem but he knew that a possible solution lied in this potential alliance. Almost as soon as he had entered the clearing a clumsy canine pup launched herself at him, Tanga shouted in surprise. "Ah, get off! Where is-Yaounde! Come and get Douala!" The king called out for the young lioness. "She’s not ‘ere." Ryder mumbled in between licks as she groomed her sister. "Well can’t you handle Douala?" The exasperated request was met with an incredulous look, "Forget I asked. Look, I’ve got to go for a couple of hours, tell your mother." "Where’re ya goin’?" The acting princess called after her father but Tanga forged ahead, hoping he didn’t run into Levita before he reached the edge of the clearing. Luck was on his side as he managed to cross the scent line without encountering any of his nosey lionesses. Tanga picked up the pace since he was running a bit behind, he really needed this alliance to work out and being late to their first meeting would give the impression that he wasn’t taking this seriously. He crossed Aristophanes’ scent line and relief washed over him as he saw that he was the first of the two to arrive. Tanga motioned for A’mira to stand just outside of the scent line until the other king arrived out of respect. And now we wait. He thought to himself. He'd always remember that voice, deep and booming and vicious beyond the cub's years. How his eyes burned like fire, his paws scorched the grass and mud as if he had coals attached to the pads of his feet. The cub was just that: a cub. Yet somehow he presented himself as Asbeel in front of him and his entire court without a hesitation. He'd roared about how he'd lay waste to Aristophanes' reign, but more surprisingly, that he'd been dreamed up by Mercurius. How in the world could that be? Banishment would do little but stall, and the wise old king decided that it was time for something unheard of among those that made their home in the Deep Glen. Felicitas, only daughter of the First King, had been the only one to know; in fact, she'd alerted him to a pride just beyond their jungle territory, one that could potentially help. A meeting would be held. The first of its kind, under the cover of a long, meandering walk that the wise king was known to take often. His gait told of his age, slowly swaying from side to side as he picked his way to their meeting place. It wouldn't be long until he would no longer be able to defend his territory and his pride. What then? An heir would need to be found, and soon. No matter, that would not be the topic for the day. His nose picked up the foreign scent of another lion in his territory, near the very fringes where the jungle was not so dense. At any other time he would have bristled, but he remained calm this time around. The clearing was not far ahead, alive with birds cnhirping overhead and the dense canopy creating blotted patterns upon the grass. It would have been peaceful, if not for the heavy subject matter at hand. "Good morn, King Tanga." Came the deep baritone of a rumble from the darker coated king. "How pleasant of you to arrive so early." There was a certain tone of respect in his voice, an admiration for a fellow king that would potentially become a powerful ally. He stopped a few steps short of being within swiping distance, however, remaining cautious. After so much having transpired over the last year, there would be little wonder why. 0 players like this post! Like? |

"And soon to be a warm afternoon. Though punctuality it's exactly a strong suit of mine this is my attempt to emulate it." Even though it was turning out to be a sweltering day he was glad that they were meeting when the sun was high. The chances of his lionesses meddling in his affairs was much lower during the hottest part of the day. Now that the introductions were over Tanga was at a bit of a loss as to how to breach the subject of the alliance. He assumed that Aristophanes didn’t tell his pride members of the specifics of the meeting and if his gals were anything like his they wouldn’t be too happy with this development. He wanted this transition to be as smooth as possible but couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that this was going to be an uphill battle. "Well, I suppose we should get all the formal mumbo jumbo out of the way. I’m not sure what you wish to gain from this alliance but my pride will soon be entering a transitional period and it would be nice to know we’ve got someone on our side." He decided to leave out the fact that he was currently heirless and was hoping to find or gain one from Aristophanes’ pride for now. 0 players like this post! Like? |

A "warm" afternoon, indeed. The jungle Aristophanes' pride resided in was dense and humid most of the time, and on particularly hot days there was so much moisture in the air that one could scarcely breathe. It was worst nearest to the lake in the dip of the glen, pressed out of the ground as if some giant paw had come down from the heaven and squeezed the earth itself. Thankfully, closer to the boarders, there was cooler shade where the trees grew high but couldn't trap in the humidity. "A king that is to the point." Aristophanes pointed out with a small smile on his muzzle. "I can appreciate that." It showed a certain level of honesty, or at least a willingness to be. He liked to think he was the same, though a few of his girls would roll their eyes if they'd ever heard it. In truth, he just had a knack for beating around the bush, perhaps exploring bizarre avenues of thought, before coming back to the point. But then came the difficult parts of this whole meeting, and the smile slowly melted from the old lion's weathered face as the task at hand came to. "That doesn't sound too bizarre. My story, on the other hand, might be a tough swallow." A pride father to the south had already turned him away, calling him a rambling king with an imagination that was running away from him in age. But Felicitas had been there to see the emergence of that cub, lighting the grass aflame with each step he took, and he knew it was no figment of his mind. The dark-coated king sat, slumping down to his belly with one paw crossed over the other in a relaxed posture. "You see, there has been a problem that appeared as of late. A cub came to my land, and he was very peculiar." Peculiar might've been the understatement of the century, but he didn't want to frighten off the fellow king immediately. "How strange, that an old king like me would be bothered by a cub, correct? But this one had a thick coat of fur, teeth and claws as long as a grown lion's, and his eyes..." Aristophanes trailed off as if trying to remember them before snapping back to attention. "He set things aflame with a touch. Scorched the grass and mud where he walked, he did. He presented himself before myself and my court, and I know we hadn't gone collectively mad." The rambling, droning manner in which Aristophanes spoke made it almost sound like he was telling some sort of tale. "As much as you would like the peace of mind knowing someone is on your side, having someone on our side would be nice for when that wretched cub comes back." 0 players like this post! Like? |

The word ‘peculiar’ set Tanga’s teeth on edge. He had seen many strange things in his lifetime though they paled in comparison to the extraordinary beginnings of the Mugumu pride. The king was fairly open-minded, maybe a bit too open at times, but as the older king explained the troubling situation a chill crept up Tanga’s back despite the heat of the day. The patchwork king nodded slightly as he took in his new ally’s words. Tanga could already hear the fuss Ryder and her crew would make. He loved his daughter deeply but she was selfish and deeply distrusting of outsiders. He knew no matter how he spun it Ryder would vehemently object to this arrangement. Tanga just hoped he had enough of her peers on his side to discourage her from trying anything rash. “Sounds like you’ve got yourself quite a predicament. I can’t promise that my pride’ll be much help but we’ll do what we can.” As Tanga gave the promise he couldn’t really wrap his head around the idea of taking on a lion with abilities like the ones Aristophanes described. But a few of the features of the cub rang a bit of familiarity with the aging king. He had heard of heavy coated cubs with elongated teeth and claws being born into a neighboring pride though that’s where the similarities ended. Setting things ablaze with a mere touch, Tanga had never heard of such a thing. “While my pride has their share of enemies I don’t think any of them are as...troubling as the one you described. Do forgive me for rushing through this a bit, if I’m gone too long I fear my pride might come looking for me. I think it best if we push on to pride flow.” Tanga gave a brief, or as brief as he could, summary of the Mugumu dynamics and innerworkings. He told Aristophanes of their feeding and hunting styles, cub introduction ceremonies, and how they handled conflict. The dos and don’ts of the Mugumu pride were all laid out, and as he finished he looked at his new ally expectantly. Wondering silently if his expression revealed the hint of hesitation that he had after the revelation of Aristophanes’ quandary. 0 players like this post! Like? |

Aristophanes was no warmonger: a lion that took on the motto of "make love, not war". At the same time, the pride was only about two royal generations old. The dark coated lion was only second in a line of kings, starting with the enigmatic and and mysterious Mercurius the Fortunate. He had heard stories told by the First King himself, how he was lead to the Deep Glens by a dragonfly that whispered in his ear. Aristophanes had the deep privilege of being trained, no matter how briefly, under the other and he was grateful for that. However, he'd mysteriously disappeared, leaving the young philosopher to fend for himself with a pride that had not quite come to respect him yet. But this Asbeel cub, he had boomed about Mercurius and how the First King had dreamed him into being. What a bizarre concept. He wasn't sure if it was truth, but then how else would the fiery beast know about him? Deep mysteries to ponder, but this time at a cost. "Whatever help you are willing to offer, I am willing to take." It settled him, if only just a little. Some sort of alliance that promised help was better than none at all. Aristophanes knew that being without allies at this point in time was dangerous, though even he wasn't too keen on forming one without reason. His wives, on the other hand... He wasn't entirely sure how many of them would react. And the old philosopher listened carefully as his fellow king spoke of his pride. An interesting bunch, from the sounds of it, as dynamic as any he'd come across that lived just to their west. Their boarders barely touched, but it was close enough that it would be convenient. He pondered on it for a few moments, staring just past the patchwork king's gaze in deep thought before he gave him a nod. "Very well. I suppose, I should tell you about the Pride of the Deep Glens." And so he did. Thankfully it wasn't as extensive, as they had only had one king before him. Mercurius, however, took up a decent chunk of the explanation. Such a legendary figure, for a lion that had not been here long. It didn't matter, though, because if nothing else, Aristophanes was thorough. Pride dynamics were all set out in plain light, ceremonies, notable figures, hunting and feeding... If King Tanga had been so honest, then so would he. When the dark coated king finally drew to a close, he heaved a deepened sigh. "I understand if you must be brief about this meeting. If our prides are to meet, it must be... casual. Something on neutral territory, perhaps, a fluffball hunt?" 0 players like this post! Like? |

The thought of a friendly gathering to introduce the prides to each other had Tanga’s worry deflating a bit. His girls were nothing if not eager to participate in get togethers and if the king could manage to keep any mention of an alliance until after the lionesses had befriended the pride of the Deep Glens it could be an easy transition. After taking a couple of seconds to mull the idea over he decided this would be the best way to ease the Mugumu girls into the alliance. “A fluffball hunt would be an excellent introduction for the prides. There’s a fair sized plateau just east of here that would make a great meeting area for the hunt.” The area was at the edge of the Mugumu pride territory and overlapped a bit into Aristophanes’. It was neutral enough territory that Tanga was fairly confidant that his girls would be on their best behavior, well most of them at least. Ryder was a wild card and if Yaounde was coming along she’d do just about anything to ruffle Tanga’s mane. If he could manage to convince Criniera to come along she’d make sure the younger lionesses kept in line. The insight Aristophanes gave into his pride structure was akin to the Mugumu pride, granted there were vast differences but the way the pair of kings ran their pride was similar enough that a civilized mingling wouldn’t be out of the question. The mottled king quashed down the flicker of doubt that arose, he couldn’t afford to second guess himself now. Every pride had their share of baggage and even though the troublesome cub sounded like a pawful, Tanga was confidant that between the two prides they could handle him. Tanga didn’t have many years left and he wanted to make a lasting impression on the pride. He wanted to be remembered as a king that aided in progression, not just one that facilitated it. Pharaoh Khaba had set up the pride in such a way that it was easy for Tanga to step into the role of king. And the way the Mugumu clan was run now was fine but he wanted to improve upon the pride he loved so dearly. After the crumbling of the partnership they had with the Mohari pride and the heir situation a new alliance was just want the group needed. “We can meet there in two days time.” The faint call of Terra, Criniera’s greater striped swallow advisor, had Tanga on high alert. He needed to be getting back to the ladies soon or risk the opportunity of an effortless beginning to the alliance. “I’m afraid I must get back. I’ll send A’mira ahead to give word when we depart.” 0 players like this post! Like? |

The spring season was coming, and that meant a time of plenty. Prey and, most notably, fluffballs came out of their burrows at this time of year, which would mean both prides would have a lot to keep their respective lionesses distracted and working together. It was much too bad that this hunt would be based more in deception than just the good natured activity of getting together; few of his own would know about it. In fact, it would likely be nobody but Felicitas, who urged him to come and meet with the leader of the other pride in the first place. "I know of the plateau. An excellent choice." Some of his own lionesses liked to take walks there, and Moana - bless her departed soul - would tell him of how she used to take moonlit strolls there with the First King before he disappeared. It brought back a lot of memories, perhaps nothing to younger pride members, but definitely to him. No matter, it would make a fine meeting place for a new beginning, and he had nothing of opposition to say. The darker coated King nodded vaguely when two days was proposed as the time frame. He had little to do in two days, and he would inform all those who would like to attend. The Pride of the Deep Glens was a small one, the dense jungle too challenging to keep a large harem. It had been that way since the beginning, composed of the riffraff and the vagabonds that came to them through some method or another. There was the faint call of a bird that made Aristophanes' ears perk, but his posture remained lax until King Tanga announced his departure. "I will look forward to it, King Tanga." The aging lion slowly got to his feet once more, giving his swept mane a small shake. "I suppose I'll be taking my leave as well. I bid you a safe journey back to your pride." With that and another small dip of his head, Aristophanes turned and slunk back into the dense wall of jungle that made his home. His steps were practiced, fading into the noises of the background until they could be heard no more. He must find Felicitas, if only to tell her the small piece of good news. There was a chance for them, after all. 0 players like this post! Like? |
