”We were a people that had always remained hidden…”
Werewolves, weredogs, shifters. We had all different types of names that we were labelled in books, movies, and television shows that aired late at night. Humans, somewhere deep in their hindbrains must have remembered a time were we stood alongside them as equals. Their minds had twisted it though into thinking us mindless, savage beasts with a lust for violence. So here we stayed, hidden right alongside them as their friends, as their guardians, and as their source of comfort. In front of humans, changing to human shape was forbidden. We could have left like the wolves did, left and went feral; living in our own tribes and hunting under the moonlight like animals far away from the clutches of humans. But we didn’t, we chose to stay right here alongside a being that loved us because they would never really know us…We chose to protect them and that’s what we did.
”It was a blizzard that would rock the foundations of all we knew…”
Forecasters rambled on about it, scientists fought about its upcoming existence, and humans prepped for it the best they could. A mass blizzard was brewing, its cloud mass large enough to covered the US and most of Mexico and Canada. We knew it was coming, could feel it in our very bones; an ache that dated back to the flowing blood of our ancestors, the Dire wolf. Humans began to notice their beloved pets going missing just as the humans decided to try and move down towards Mexico in hopes of escaping this monster blizzard. We, us, these dogs who had fled, we had other ideas. We were all moving north, upwards and away from the eye of the blizzard too come. Many of us felt like cowards for running and leaving our people to a snowy death, but knew that we would meet the same fate if we stayed. We were joined on our journey by wolves and other dogs of all shapes and sizes, they moved with us; helping us kill and drag animals such as deer and elk to consume while this blizzard was raging. We made it to our destination two days before the blizzard was scheduled to hit. Skyscrapers towered over head like living giants. The shifter populace had split along this journey; taking companies of other wolves with them, but we stayed with our own group. Hauling pounds upon pounds of food and what few supplies we scavenged, we made our way up in the forms of humans. It was on the top floor, rooms 2221-2234 that we decided to stay in due to a lack of windows. When the blizzard hit many dogs with shorter coats grew ill and some even passed from the freezing temperatures despite the fact we even lit fires…the others relied on bigger dogs too keep them warm. This monstrous snow storm raged for nearly 72 days…and when we came out, the world was not the one we knew before…
”We came out changed, just like the world around us…”
We had busted out windows on the floor below us, unable to reach any of the other ones below. The snow was thick, heavy enough to walk on even in our human form, some even believed it had frozen in sheets underneath. The clouds above were dark and grey but no more snow fell, so out we walked, dog alongside wolf. It took a few days, but we soon said our goodbyes on good terms outside the building we now called home, watching the wolves leave to go find their own kind again. Both groups had to do what they did best and survive… Hunting was scarce, rabbits, mice, and other small rodents nowhere to be seen. But elk, deer, and moose could be found if you looked. Birds were good eating as well if you could find them. We had started to rebuild, keeping the building as our shelter we changed it to help better us; Moose and elk skins lined walls to insulate it, animal fat was used as candles, some skins were given to those dogs whose fur was not suited this weather as they began to learn the ways of healing since they could not explore, hunt, or scavenge often in the cold. All was going well for us…till they arrived…
”They were dogs built for fighting, with conniving and manipulative attitudes and a hunger for violence…”
These dogs appeared as if from the very dark skies itself. They were large breeds, all muscle and some built like tanks and others standing extremely tall. Smart, some were even crossbred with wolves and showed the wolf’s cunning. Their leader spoke with a silver tongue and the charisma of a snake before it bit. Offering to help us if we would let them take shelter in our camp, share food and warmth, and agree to allow their leader to rule us. They wanted us to give in an assimilate, or run us out and kill us. They had planned on taking our comfortable space from us anyways. And these dogs seem to have no problem chasing us out into the cold under the pretense of us being cruel and trespassing where we didn’t belong. It is now up to us too survive here. We survived the coming of this ice age…and we will not be run out by the greed of this group. Will you join their side…or fight back for your own? It’s all up to you…
