It's a simple thing to ask people to explain why they support or don't support a suggestion, yet only a fraction of people do. So why not actually require people to explain why they like or don't like a suggestion, either by commenting on the topic or upvoting someone else's comment?

Implementation is simple: you either write and submit a comment or upvote another person's comment. The submit button is hit, the page reloads, then you can vote on the suggestion.

Please explain why you support or don't support.

This suggestion has 8 supports and 98 NO supports.

ok support to a point, (I supported) I don't think it should be required but when you hit either support or not support I believe a comment box should pop up before actually sending and it should be optional because I believe if it pops up right after someone might give it a thought and actually write something.

I don't think you should be forced to justify your vote on a subject. The option to comment is there and it's enough.

A lot of people wont type actual reasons. They'll just slap their keyboard for it to count. eq0ineeqdonoeuqbd9b

I can think of several reasons why people wouldn't want to comment, not interested in the hassle, just putting their vote, not wanting to deal with conflict or debates, and that's just what I come up with on the top of my head.... same as someone supporting. So leaning towards no support.... i won't vote either way on this for now though.... and i think voting has a right to be anonymous....

I don't feel that a no support should require an explanation.
Sometime people don't feel like sharing their reason why they gave a no support. Sometimes they aren't sure how to put it into words. Sometimes they know their opinion would receive backlash from those that support it.

So that being said, no support from me.

Edit: Half the time I don't even comment on ones I do support. I just like the idea but have nothing to add to it.

As for upvoting a comment, what if no one has made a comment the user agrees with? Do they just not get a say in the suggestion? Are they required to upvote something they may or may not agree with just to no support the suggestion? (If they don't want to comment.)

I'm genuinely curious about this part.

or you could have a section that allows for an anonymous writing but make sure the name is put on the admins side so they can look if someone misuses that ability.

the simple system of clicking an "i support!" button or an "i dont support!" button is perfectly adequate. if someone really wants to elaborate on their opinion, they can post in the thread.

I don't really like the upvote/downvote idea! It might make people who have a counterargument to a popular opinion, feel harassed or feel pressured to stay silent.

Plus, Lioden is a rather small community, and I don't think there are many trolls who downvote just because. Unless there poses to be legitimate problems, I think the current system is fine.

If people want to explain their reasoning, they will. If they don't, they won't. If you make it mandatory you're gonna get people keysmashing to fill the quota and go about their business, which will then clog up the actual reasons you would've gotten as comments anyways. It's a waste of time and the people who would actually use it would do it whether it's mandatory or not

Honestly I don’t think this is necessary. If something gets a bunch of no supports it seems overkill for every single person to need to give a reason or upvote someone else's when everything that needs to be said has already been said. And not liking something doesn’t always require an explanation.

This just risks deterring people from voting, or even reading and contributing to suggestions at all
