In 1859, a strange man stepped foot in the remote little town of Newhaven. His only action was to speak to the mayor, speaking a warning that the town was cursed. Anyone who was foolish enough to stay by midnight would come down with a terrible sickness the likes of which had never been seen. He did not explain himself further, and he did not stay to listen to any questions. He disappeared from the town just as quickly and quietly as he had arrived, a swift shadow that no one was sure had even truly existed in the first place.

Most did not heed the warning, and as such sealed their fate. Night inevitably came, and the moon rose into the sky. All was normal until a twisted howl pierced the silence, sending chills down ther spines. The howl was not from a wolf, but was something otherworldly, sounding the town's destruction like the single, morose toll of a church bell. And with the howl, an ominous dull red bled into the moon as if lit with an inner flame, sending the citizens into a panic.

The sickness spread like a black cloud over the town's inhabitants. One by one, every man and creature in and around the town began to fall, either from tearing each other apart or from the sickness itself. All but one man. A man terrified of what he had done, the promise he made to survive that dreaded disease. He was immune to the curse, but at what cost? As with a loan, your debt must be paid. Your great-grandchild's firstborn will suffer the fate you have avoided. And as with any loan, there will be interest.

Fast forward over the years, the sickness fading away and the town filling back up with people. With each year that passed, less and less believed the tales that passed down the generations, all originally from a single surviving man of a deadly disease that had destroyed the town. "It never really happened," they said. "It's all just a myth." There was no sign of a sickness, only the man who claimed he had survived it. The town's sudden emptiness had been strange, but it was not as crazy as the man had said it had been.

175 years after the sickness, a baby named Finnley Hunter was born. The great-grandson of the man who claimed to have survived the Newhaven Plague, just a vague event in few citizens' minds. Nothing was amiss until the boy's 25th birthday, the same night the man had made his promise.

And the night was shot through with a distorted howl.
