Note- This is NOT suggesting it should be possible to opt out of encounters entirely. It's easy to see how that could be abused by someone who decides to opt out of every encounter that doesn't give you something. I am NOT suggesting that.

This morning, I got the "dead human" encounter three times in a single bar of energy. I'm sure that's more than the average, but it's not fun any time I'm clicking through an animal game and suddenly see a human corpse.

I'm not opposed to the encounter in theory, I just don't want to see it. I think there should be an option to toggle explore images off and on. In my case, I'd still lose energy, see the text, and get the reward (if there is one; I click away too fast to check), the only difference is that instead of the picture, I'd just see the background of whatever zone I was in.

This would help people who don't want to see the art for whatever reasons, such as being freaked out by it or just not liking the way it looks (looking at you, people complaining about the new art for the "starving leopard" encounter). I can also picture people using this to toggle off the different mating animal encounters next month; I don't personally have a problem with them but I wouldn't be surprised if they gross some people out.

There are no downsides to this that I can think of (if you think of any, let me know). If you like the art, you don't have to toggle the image off. People who toggle them off won't have any advantage from "skipping" encounters, since they're not skipping them. The only disadvantage that comes to mind is accidentally clicking past a good encounter because you have the image off and mistake it for an nothing encounter, or whatever it's called when the text just says "You explore, but find nothing."

There are two ways I see how this could work. The first one is a button on the explore page, maybe near the map button. When you get an encounter you don't want to see, you hit the button and the image disappears. The image stays gone every time you get the encounter, until you hit the button again to toggle it back on. The disadvantage to this is you'd have to actually get the encounter at least once if you want to hide it.

The other way could be a dropdown menu in Account Options. It would list all the encounters, and you could pick one to opt out. The toggled encounters could be in another box on the page, and you would just delete them from that box to turn them on again.

(I'll try and make mockups for both options later; I can picture them really well but aren't sure exactly how to describe them. They're both based off toggles/menus I've seen on other sites so I know they're codeable.)

If a toggled encounter can lead to a fight, say if you really don't like the Smug Leopard art, the art during the fight would be invisible as well. The icon at the top right would either be empty, or replaced by a generic icon.

Would you use this feature? Would you hate it? Did I miss something? Anything to add? Please let me know! I think this would be really handy without having a big impact on anyone who doesn't use it, but there could have been something I overlooked.

This suggestion has 20 supports and 3 NO supports.

I've heard so many people mention they'd like this in Feb, March, and October that I'm surprised it isn't already a thing.

Yes, I know ad-blockers can be used to block images, but this would also be extremely useful for those times I'm on mobile and the images are taking forever, or I'm out somewhere on public wifi and again, images are just taking so long it slows down everything.

i was really happy to see us finally get an event encounter censor this last february. i am still deeply disappointed this has not been applied broadly to explore, from event encounters to regular encounters. it feels like the team would rather keep kids from seeing sexual images while they explore in class, rather than accommodate people with arachnophobia, intrusive thoughts, hallucinations, and various other mental/emotional issues who would also benefit from an entire explore encounter toggle. which is quite sad honestly; i know the arachnophobes have been asking for such a feature for *several years*.

personally, i would rather skip march and october outright simply to avoid needing to quite literally manually block the explore box with my other hand the entire month. i’m simply in too much pain for a 1 handed game to require 2 hands. it’s sad my only options are to aggravate my physical pain, or skip events entirely.

accessibility should never be optional.

gonna bump this shit like it’s my own goddamn thread until i get an answer as to why it’s necessary to offer the option to block images of mating animals but not literal gore or other common phobia triggers

again i am wondering why this isn’t the default for explore at all times… given that we can hide the encounter images for the jaglion quest. sure there’s some pee but it’s also paw prints and rocks like, tf? but me not wanting to see undead (to avoid intrusive thoughts at best, actual hallucinations at worst) is my own problem to deal with. please ELI5

Just to clarify, because of how encounters are currently coded, the censor script picks up some encounters but not all. We will work to add this in during the recode, for now please make use of the guides (in the wiki) on how to block images using adblocker extensions.

Apologies for the inconvenience.

thank you for the clarification! i am on mobile as always so we shall see if it is possible to manually block on my end.

edit: ok so it’s not possible on iOS with safari BUT it is possible with the browser called “orion”. orion allows custom filtering by default—it also allows firefox and gchrome extensions, but i didn’t have any success with getting ublock origin to work. orion’s built in blocker works though!

enter settings
scroll all the way down to content blocker
tap “manage”
scroll down for custom filters
add the image URLs you wish to hide, then press done
voila! https://imgur.com/a/GQua1vh
