The Liolocke Thread

All credit for the name and original ruleset on LD goes to Lynx.

Welcome! This thread is meant to serve as the main discussion hub for anyone partaking in (or interested in) the Liolocke challenge. At the moment this is a casual thing without an official clan, though this may change if enough people join the challenge.

what is a Liolocke?
The Nuzlocke challenge as a concept originates from the Pokemon games, and has since been groomed to apply to other pet/sim sites. The original rules are meant to not only be challenging but also heart-wrenching from a lore perspective. Loss and hardship are common themes, but in turn it's incredibly rewarding to achieve your goals and overcome those hardships.

The LioDen Nuzlocke, or Liolocke as Lynx originally coined it, is designed to make LioDen more challenging and to also generate lore/stories within your pride. The stakes are high and the rules can be a little insane, but it's a great way to add some spice to your everyday LD life! :D

the rules
The original rules were designed by Lynx and posted in their progress thread. Since Lynx first started their challenge, several others have begun to participate and each person has put their own personal spin on the goals and rules. There are, however, some core rules/features that we feel make the Liolocke what it is:

You must start the challenge with nothing. No items, no currency.
All pride lions must be claimed or bred by you. Lions cannot be bought from other players.
All food and toys are earned. Liolocke lions may only be fed with food hunted by Liolocke hunters. Toys must be found in Explore or through submale patrols.

make it your own!
While participating in a Liolocke is meant to be challenging, it shouldn't be so impossible that you can't enjoy yourself. So far, every person that has joined the challenge has tailored the rules to their own personal play style. See our list of participants for links to their rulesets if you'd like to see how other people are playing.

@Wolf

Good idea about the aging advice. I may go ahead and start in 3 days that way I can maybe age down my rolled king and he can live longer with better stats.

@Vis

I forgot about female groupies that could allow some good breed-only traits! Moat of my pide is already goan the one thing is is I have a set of NCL hunters never bred before, but I think that already meses up the challange in one of the rules, so I need to think of what to do there.

It depends on how you want to do it!
Indy, for example, started with a 2nd gen king and I think two original lionesses who left the old pride to start a new one with him.

I think the main feature of the challenge that really makes it a "liolocke" is that you start with nothing (currency and items-wise) and earn everything yourself. It shouldn't be something that makes the game unplayable or stressful for you by any means, at least not the way I look at it. xD I did a bit of browing on another sim site that has a LOT of different versions of "Nuzlockes," and they all range from ultra-hardcore-strict to laidback and more lore-based. So definitely do it the way you want to and the way that will allow you to enjoy the challenge the most!

I'd suggest maybe checking out some of the other rulesets people have made to get an idea of the different variations that are currently in play. Then tailor it to what will suit you.

Yup! I did…
I had just made my king Primal and really, really didn't want to reroll because of that little investment. Given how I started my side, he is still the product of all my own breeding however, as were the lionesses I kept. My ruleset is slightly different too. I'm focusing a lot on lore and cub training—and building stats. And pretty lions. xD

@Vis

I may keep my hunter NCLs but not use the food they bring just because they are being trained for other purposes. I am going to make my challange extreamly hard but I need to make some idea of how to make it difficult but still alright to play. I may add a item buying clause that designates that certin things can be bought to be used but only with liolock currency with a monthly limit. This will allow some new thing without causing it to be to easy. Similar to a item shop with limited monthly stock.

That's what I did! I copy/pasted everybody's rules into a notepad and cobbled mine together based on how I felt I'd enjoy playing vs. the toughness of the rules laid out. I'll probably make amendments as I figure out what feels more like a challenge to me, or places where I felt I've missed a valuable opportunity for Fun.

Keeping your old King should probably only affect the difficulty of your goals for the Liolocke; if you start with a rolled king it's much more likely that your goals are going to be simpler. If you've got a high-stat, beautiful king for the challenge, you might find those kinds of goals to be too easy. What's a challenge when you're not using outside help to get your vision of a perfect pride?
